This back-to-school study is getting mocked on Twitter, although some students interviewed by the Chicago Tribune believe the findings. One says: "When someone constantly sees photos of parties, they sort of feel they're missing out. It sort of glorifies the whole thing. Especially if you haven't done it before, it could be a gateway to make them think it's all right" to drink and use drugs.

Could be that teens who drink and take drugs are more likely to use social media.
Correlation != causality.

We all know that the cool kids use social media. And who smokes, drinks, does drugs, etc.? The cool kids, duh!

That explains why my last Facebook post was 4 months ago.
I'm a sober, non heroin shooting,no crack smoking,loser!
Well, that, and the fact I didn't see my grand kids,who aren't cute,we didn't go to the fast food place to make them even fatter, and i didn't take a picture of them doing something that only a mom would find cute.
Plus,
I didn't find the golden pile of pig shit in farm ville,
Well, also, I'm about 30 years too late to be a teen.

Facebook - who cares?

@Phranqlin: My thoughts EXACTLY... which came first, smoking, drinking & drugs? Or social networking? It's most likely that the kids who are partying (and would party regardless of facebook's existence) are the very kids who like to share their adventures - with everyone!
what a bunch of maroons.

You know, I hate people who start out things with you know.
And I do it a lot. Bad habit.
What I think about this? Most people 'friend' real friends and acquantances. Remember when mom was always saying 'don't hang out with the wrong crowd, bad apples, etc?' I think that with all the friends, there are bound to be more than a few 'bad apples' in the bunch. And since they throw parties, and everyone wants to go to parties, then people are more apt to be socialized (or around) drugs and alcohol.
So, with the advent of social media, now they are more exposed to more parties (or more bad apples).
That's my unscientific explanation. I think it makes some sense.
