Douglas Carncross, 26, had his face near the window of a police car and was taunting the dog inside. "He was sticking his face close to the cage, yelling and screaming at the dog and sticking his tongue out and making faces," says a cop. As the officer began to run toward the scene, the taunter allegedly opened the door of the patrol vehicle, which allowed the to stick out his head. Alarmed, Carncross then slammed the door on the dog's head. He's OK though.
Screaming man taunted, injured police dog (TribLocal.com)
Slamming a car door on ANY animal's head is ground for being arrested IMO. If he had been only making faces and screaming, no, that wouldn't be grounds but when this douchebag decided it would be funny to actually hurt the dog, he EARNED his trip to the slammer.

let the dog have his way with the guy.

The real cruelty here is the training the dog undergoes to be a tool of the cops. Don't you think that the dog would rather be in a home with people who love him and don't force him to go and bite people?

Actually, KDP. I've seen tv shows on Animal Planet about these dog cops and these dogs LOVE their jobs. The police treat their dogs really well. They invest a lot of $$ in the training of each and every dog. In order to keep the dog productive, they keep the dog happy because a depressed dog will not perform as well as a happy dog.
These dogs ENJOY biting the "bad guys" because they are trained that it's "good" behavior and get rewarded for it.

Sure, KDP, except that most people arrested by the cops are not "bad guys," they are people engaged in peaceful consensual behavior who should be left alone.

KDP No doubt there are idiots everywhere and the police are not immune to them. I am certain what you suggest happens, but I submit the incidence is much lower in the police dogs than in the population at large.
OTOH I am a volunteer fireman and the local sheriff often trains dogs right next to the station. I have observed numerous training sessions. I have never seen a dog abused here. Most dogs can only be described as "eager" to play what they think is a game they are rewarded for. If a dog is not enthusiastic or is gun shy it washes out of training and becomes a pet, I took one that washed out, and she is an excellent dog with no vices (except perhaps her insistence on eating wild onions - phew).

@ Nicholas - are you an idiot?
Posted by: toni | Friday, August 26, 2011 at 07:07 AM
KDP, the dog is taught that if he does as he is trained, he gets rewarded...so the dog IS doing exactly what he wants.

In a perfect world, the dog gets a treat, and we slam the car door on Douglas a few times.

@Many: Seriously, train her to not do that - onions will kill your dog eventually. Every onion she eats is whittling away at the ability of her blood to carry oxygen.

@Quothz, I have and I do. She is incorrigible :) She is seven years old and a willful alpha female who is set in the ways. I will say that eating onions has not diminished her drive one iota and she rarely gets the opportunity, abut when she gets the opportunity - whew her breath will take the paint off your car.

@ Toni, Nicholas was joking and it was very obvious. You however are exactly what you falsely accused him of being with your dumb question, an idiot.
This guy deserves to be arrested and jailed for a very long long time. I also would approve of him being manhandled for resisting arrest, if you know what I mean

What's the point of taunting a police dog? Methinks his head was slammed in a car door a few too many times.

WTF? Where is Naperville? Looking at the other headlines on that page, just want to make sure I stay as far away from that place as possible.

To all who commented: That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

the crime wasn't taunting the dog but the crime was injuring the dog

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW STUPID LAW ENFORCEMENT HAS BECOME. IT IS LIKE A LITTLE KID CRYING TEACHER HE MADE FACES AT ME.

monkeyscrew is a fine example of what an ass I make of myself when I don't read the articles.
Damn. *headsmack*
Sorry to all who have had to read those posts....

Not sure how the treaining is for the dogs but a buddy of mine is on the force and when his dog got over its age limit he was allowed to take it home as a pet.I can say he seems like a nice and happy dog and a close part of that family , goes everywhere he can with them.

Christ on a Crutch, Dude... These ain't no friggin' yappers here, They are BRED for this work and They excel at it. Of COURSE, they're Happy doing it
Your comment reminded me of the STUPID Animal Lover who got mad at me for Torturing my 72# Black Lab / Golden X
by taking her biking riding at the park in 82 degrees. She was a mile from the previous swim break and a mile before the next one and the Dumb-Ass Tree-hugger type was yelling at me that the dog was exhausted and SO abused as to be completely soaked in a Lather... Think sweaty Horse rid' 'til he dropped, Folks. Idjit didn't KNOW dogs don't sweat, I guess.
Sometimes I really wonder about this universal suffrage thing... mebbe it ain't all its cracked up to be.
