Cincinnati Post story from March 10, 1999 says the ads would typically give thanks to a particular saint for answering a prayer, duplicate the prayer and encourage people to use the same prayer - often with the inducement "never been known to fail."
Hey, I get emails like that all the time. They say if I pass them on to 10 others, I'll get lots of $$.

Mom's mother was a "lapsed Catholic" but used to get the local church newspaper all the time. I saw those ads and thought it was silly to put an ad in the paper thanking someone dead for centuries for granting someone's wish.
