Man threatens to kill veterinarian after his beloved dog dies
"They called him to come get the [dead] dog and he just lost it," says a police department spokeswoman. "That’s when he pulled out a knife and started to choke the doctor and pushed a nurse." (Florida Today)
S-T-A-B-O, S-T-A-B-O, S-T-A-B-O and Stab-O was his name-O!
Don't get me wrong, your pets are dear & charming creatures. Just don't forget that you are on Team Human.

Team Human. As if humans weren't animals and my animal weren't more human then some of the bric-a-brac walking upright around here.

Well, given the general reading material at the Obscure Store, I sometimes think I'd be better off if I could switch from Team Human to Team Canine, and like my dog better than perhaps 75% of the people I know and 105% of the politicians. That said, a dog is a living thing and I realize the doctors are doing their best, and not every outcome is favorable. If you believe your vet is incompetent, and they're out there just like people doctors, take your canine, or grandma for that matter, somewhere else.

Sorry all, I'm apparently having some click problems today.

I was reading the comments over there... the man's daughter started posting. Oy...
I like most animals better than most people. I'll leave it at that.

Animals are great, no doubt. Given our own human way of percieving reality we are often unaware of behaviors that our pets would consider deviant among their species, I assure you the animal equivalents of the people stupids we see here everyday exist in equal numbers. Probably a bigger reason that animals get a pass and our unconditional love is that we find their behavior to be more harmonious with observable nature. It is easier to see all animal behavior as natural than to do so for human beings. When we force our observations on ourselves we often create the conundrum of being unable to see the forest through the trees.
One thing that animals cannot do, that perhaps our odd behaviors can be accounted for by, is to have any chance of moving the life forms of this planet throughout the cosmos and preserving life by spreading through the universe and increasing the chances of the continued existence of living beings. This is truly a worthy goal for humans if we would ever pull our heads out of our ass and look to our future instead of being blindsighted by instant gratification.
That is why humans deserve your appreciate, wonder and respect. Of course they seem stupid and insane, but so does anything clutching at the cusp of greatness. In order to acheive these things together we require eachothers support, and not to reduce one another to statuses lower than our pets.

Hey Emp? Compelling argument... however...
If I had a choice between someone like Hitler Jr. and a stranger's dog to rescue from a burning building, I'd pick the dog. Hands down. I've been lucky enough not to know many "Hitler Jr.'s" (as an example name, non-specific), but the ones who I do know continue to do more harm just by living than contributing to the species as a whole.
Perhaps that makes you a better person than I, and some other posters... and I don't mind admitting that. And no, I'd rescue you over a dog from a burning building (I don't consider you a Hitler Jr.). ;) But yeah, Fred Phelps and his inbred church of suck is another example of Dear God Why Hasn't Darwin Kicked In Yet?

I disagree.
(and agree with K. =)

EMP du NORT;
I can think of no greater human aspiration than extending our reach to distant galaxies, and into the cosmos itself.
That will undoubtably be a long time coming, due mostly to the maturity factor, and of course our reluctance to let go of the worst in canine behavior, and train ourselves to behave less like a pack of wild dogs.
Or swine for that matter.

So where is the dog's body? Did they leave it in the guy's car? Take it as evidence?
Posted by: Reno | Monday, March 29, 2010 at 08:42 AM
I feel sorry for the guy. It's horrible to lose a loved one in such a manner. To be in mourning, then wind up in jail, too? I guess it's easy for me to say because I wasn't choked, but I'd hope that I'd have had more compassion for the patient's "parent" than this vet.
I glanced at some of the reader comments, and opinions of this vet do not appear universally stellar. Not that that proves anything; for all we know, it could be a bunch of cranks airing their gums.
I was wondering, though: is there some State Medical Board that oversees vets, too? I know there's supposedly a State Medical Board that allegedly oversees people-doctors, but they have earned my disgust in spades.

Some fun one-liners out here: Team Human and the Inbred Church of Suck (THICS). Could be a new band name...

Nothing improves, certainly not an entire species, when it is bogged down in self hatred and has a clear lack of great goals and purposes. We cannot wait for humans to be great before we aspire to acheive greatness, we must first aspire and then slowly drag the least of us up, rather than being dragged down as a whole by the cynicism inspired by least common demoniators of humanity.
We are really pretty amazing creatures, and although that IS very hard to hold sight of, taking a moment out each day to remind yourself is helpful.
I too am plagued by the disease of cynicism, forgive me my brief desperate moments of clarity.

Dear people of planet Earth,
I don’t know how to tell you this, but the truth is THIS isn’t working anymore. I have cherished all of my time with you and you helped to shape me into the person that I am today. I will never forget all of the times we sat silently watching the sun rise and set together, but I think it is time for us to start seeing other planets (and suns). There is just so much going on in your world that I do not want to be a part of. The more that I think of it, the more I realize that we want different things for our futures. This will be difficult for both of us, as we have grown dependent on one another, but I am certain once we go our separate ways into new galaxies we can each find those things that we want to accomplish in our lives and be happier for it. More than anything, I hope that we can still be friends. I don’t want us to go our separate ways and then just let go of everything we have built together. There are still parts of ‘us’ that will always remain, no matter how far apart our new lives may carry us, and I hope we can both use this opportunity to gain the wisdom and insight to strengthen our new roles in one another’s life. I have made up my mind about this, and I hope you won’t drag this out and make it ugly. I just want your support and blessing so I can walk away and leave all concerned parties with their dignity intact.
I will always love you…

=S I had a vet euthanize a pet without permission once. Bastard claimed it was shock. Then charged me for the biopsy that killed my pet. That would have lived another few months just fine... I understand why the guy would be tempted. Especially since the vet I went to has a rep for animals dying suddenly from starvation. Perhaps that doc has a similar rep?
Posted by: Jennay | Monday, March 29, 2010 at 05:27 PM
Last time we took grandpa to the vet, he sat up all night trying to lick himself.

Emp, that is the sweetest breakup letter I've ever read, and possibly the cleanest dirty laundry I've ever seen aired. You two (two?) must've had quite a thing. I hope you'll excuse me for admitting I'm a bit jealous. 'Tis better to have loved, and all that.
Whatever is fueling this brief, desperate moment of clarity, may it give you the strength to forgive the people of the planet Earth when they post unflattering videos of you to the Tosh.0 blog in hopes of cheap laughs.

@EN1
"So long and thanks for all the fish" fits better, and in significantly fewer words.

I am fond of EMP,,,,no bones about it,, and doubt his untimely and emotional departure.
You see,,desperate moments of clarity is not clarity at all. And assumming the noblese oblige to leave the writers here with dignity intact,,,definitely makes an ass out of someone.
But i would enjoy sharing a six pack of whatever he's toasting with!

I'm lost here. How did we end up at a Star Trek convention?
Posted by: Notch Johnson | Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 03:50 AM
This story reminds me of the star struck lovers from the quadruple amputee story. Doubtless they are boldly turning towards greatness, even as we speak.
One person's cynicism is another's clear view of the truth.
