JC Penney? They're still around? The "Speed Dressing" ad shows two teenagers in their own bedrooms stripping down to their underwear and then timing themselves as they race to put on their clothes. All this is done in preparation for the boy and girl to hang out in her basement while her mother is upstairs. (Wall Street Journal)
Ha! As a former JC Penney employee, I find this hilarious--I really do like that company a lot though. It was a pleasure working for them. I would seriously consider going back if they had a decent insurance policy, which they don't.

Maybe the agency made this for a bizarro world where there's a European JC Penney.

Hey, didn't Nokia have this same problem with the flying cat video? You guys need to check it out on You Tube. I forget what it's called but it has this ceiling fan with a toy attached to it and the cat grabs the toy and get flung against the wall. The video ends saying, "It a phone video." I thought it was hilarious. PETA would have serious issues with it.

Why would JCPenny assume this was made by the agency? I could fake that ad.
Posted by: Torgo | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 07:52 AM
That's a killer ad.
Posted by: moi | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 07:57 AM
JC Penney is in a win win situation with this one. They can distance themselves from the ad and blame their agency - which they won't stop doing business with - and at the same time get free publicity among teens who will simply LOVE this 'fake' ad.

Didn't Abercrombie and Fitch already make that ad with two cute young guys?
Posted by: thomas | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 08:34 AM
does anyone remember the volkswagon suicide bomber ad? that was the best one ever.
Posted by: chris n cali | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 08:47 AM
Is this an advertisement that's meant to promote their line of maternity wear?
Posted by: John Meeks | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 08:47 AM
JCPenney might be upset about the ad, but the publicity they're getting right now sure isn't hurting them.
I actually like shopping at Penney's. We've got one at the mall in Toledo and if I ever need a dress...its the best place to go.

This ad speaks to me, i do like scantily clad teenage girls. perhaps i would like the great selection and unbeatable prices of JC Penny.
Posted by: boynamedsue | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 09:01 AM
The faux ad and the controversy over it are both hilarious! JC Penney doth protest too much; I also think they are secretly pleased with the exposure.
Penney's isn't that horrible of a place to shop, either, as department stores go.

The semi-nudity doesn't upset me, but encouraging teenagers to wear clothing from J.C. Penny? Now that's just cruel.

>>JC Penney? They're still around?
Jim, you need to get out of your cave more often. JC Penny is one of the country's largest retailers with an $8.4 billion market cap.

Michael Bauser, your comment reminds me of how people complain about how restaurants 'get you' with their bread. The restaurant doesn't care if you're full or not - just that you spend money with them. In this case, the point is not whether the kids actually WEAR the clothes for very long, just make sure they buy those clothes at JCPenney. Besides, who would throw high-end clothes on the basement floor?
Posted by: John Meeks | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 09:23 AM
JM:
If it meant getting laid? Teenage boys would throw their clothes into a wood-chipper if it meant getting laid. High end, low end, irreplaceable family heirloom...not going to be an issue.

John Meeks, your comment reminds me of how some people never get the joke.
Posted by: Michael Bauser | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Jim, middle America still buys from JCP.
Posted by: Farmer Bob and the City | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 10:12 AM
I don't get the significance of "They're still around?" Did you hear a rumor that JC Penney died in a car crash or got killed in Iraq or something?
Posted by: Mark | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Michael Bauser - Yes, I get your joke. It's child abuse to make kids wear clothes from JCPenney :)
My point is that kids might not care what they're wearing if they're going to spend so much time on their backs anyway... Yuk yuk yuk!
Posted by: John Meeks | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I love any joke involving a wood chipper...BTW!

that girl is pretty fine. what a cutie!

YEA ..........RIGHT.....LOL
Posted by: | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 11:08 AM
This ad would have been even better if it was two teenage girls instead of a boy and a girl....
Posted by: Reno | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 11:45 AM
more interesting anyway... 18 seconds is pretty fast when your talkin about getting dressed.. i dont think i could do it, but at the same time im not doing time trials.

How does a fake ad win an award?
Posted by: jbrecken | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Hey, how about 2 men?
I wouldn't care what they were advertising, either!
Posted by: Anna | Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 12:00 PM
I don't think the kind of people who would get upset over this ad are smart enough to grasp the reason for their outrage in the first place.
I like it, though. It's actually pretty funny.

I feel that JCPenney had the right to react the way they did. The put of money into thier name and it's very important. They have great JCPenny coupons online too.
