Anyone who believes in ghosts, poltergeists, spirits, orbs or any other paranormal beings is a fool, as are the people who watch shows like "Ghost Hunters" or "Paranormal State." There are no ghosts, period. Anyone who believes otherwise needs to be institutionalized.

I've watched a bunch of these shows a couple times each and I've noticed a lot of stuff they have in common.
They all use the "Blair Witch Project" filming style, they spend a lot of time talking really close to the mike so you can't hear background noise and have to take them on their word that they heard a strange noise down the hall all their lighting is "heat sensing" so everything looks weird to start out and they all have some psychic that thinks everyone in the past was murdered.
On one show; a woman had died of old age, surrounded by her loving family. The psychic KNEW that she had died in her 20's of multiple stab wounds received after she had been chased through the house by a psychotic ex-lover. He even argued that the whole "married for 60 years with 4 children" had been made up to save face.
On the same show they were exploring an attic. There were some headboards that had been stored by leaning them up against the wall.
The 'psychic' stood at the end of the headboards, facing away from them. The camera was pointed at his left side. He (a right-handed man) pointed with his left hand and said "What was that?" then reached behind him with his right hand and knocked over the top headboard so it would fall. He got caught on tape only because whoever was holding the camera didn't move the lens fast enough.
That was when I stopped watching those.

All I can say is if you don't believe in ghosts, spend a night in the place where I work. The second or third time the chairs in the auditorium start moving on their own you'll probably change your mind. Or the first time you get pushed towards the door when it's time to go.

Dick said - "There are no ghosts, period"
Gotta admit, that's a pretty strong argument! Dick says that it's a clear and shut case, that's good enough for me. After all, everyone that has claimed to have witnessed something that they can't explain should just refer to Dick's lack of a similar experience as the truth.
Anyone that denies the existence of spirits must be a true Atheist since every religion that I'm aware of does believe in them.
I'm not saying that every bump in the night is a ghost or proof that your house is haunted, far from it. Most so-called hauntings are easily explained by normal causes. Several years ago I was one of those people that lurked in the dark, carrying a flashlight and camera, trying to find ghosts. The best evidence I personally got were voices on my voice recorder (EVPs in paranormal speak). The one that still creeps me out was a little girl's voice saying "yoohoo" several times. How that voice got on my new tape, with only myself and another guy in the house still baffles me.
I will agree that most paranormal shows are ridiculous and only attempt to scare the viewer. I do appreciate how the show Ghost Hunters does their best to catch evidence on video or sound tape. If they can't show their evidence with other people, it's worthless to them.
There is some good evidence out there but non believers such as Dick will only believe if a ghost appears and smacks them in the face.
Posted by: Valcia | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 12:14 PM
Valcia- Ghosts and myself have an agreement- I don't believe in them and they don't show up in my house and scare me. It's a win-win.
Posted by: sometimesilie | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 02:53 PM
Well why not? If we're going to believe in the supernatural, that is to say gods gods, angels, devils, demons...then why not ghosts? We're only taking these beliefs to their logical conclusions. If you believe in the afterlife, then you believe in souls or spirits. Why wouldn't they haunt the earth?
Posted by: Dave | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 03:27 PM
i've photographed (actual fine art stuff, not ghost hunting) a lot of abandoned rural farmhouses - even an abandoned asylum - and i've never, ever seen a ghost or caught one on film.
that doesn't necessarily make me a 'non-believer'...
but i do think those ghost hunter shows are a crock of poo.
Posted by: danielle | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 05:16 PM
I withhold judgment because, as many of you know (and as I've mentioned) I lost my other half--but a couple of weeks ago, I was photographing our house for the realtor and I got a REALLY freaky pic that included a clear symbol of ours superimposed on the fireplace. I won't say what it is, but it wasn't visible when I took the shot and nobody else knows what it is. I was pretty surprised.
Soul, spirit or whatever, it just tells me some part of us exists outside our bodies. I don't necessarily believe in a god, but I do think there's more to us than we know.
Posted by: Wolf | Friday, March 28, 2008 at 05:53 PM
Why is it so hard for most of you to believe in ghosts and the paranormal?? I find that some of these shows are truely facinating, and I've been watching Ghost Hunters since the first season. Paranormal State is ok, but don't get me started on Most Haunted; bunch of idiots afraid of their own shadows.
Those of you who gave the strongest negative responses should take some time and consider why you think that way. Does this stuff scare you that much??
Posted by: Amanda | Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 02:42 AM
Amanda, if you take a television show like Ghost Hunters seriously, then I'd suggest sharpening your critical reasoning skills. To quote Carl Sagan, "It's good to be open-minded, but not so open-minded that your brains fall out." Programs like Ghost Hunters are fine as entertainment. As long as you realize that's all it is. The fact that it's shown on the Sci-Fi channel should tip you off.
Why do I think the way I do? That's a good question. It's because I've never seen the slightest bit of evidence that any sort of supernatural entity exists, and the existence of such an entity is not logically consistent with my knowledge and understanding of the natural world. Am I frightened by the idea that ghosts may indeed exist, as you suggest? Not at all. On the contrary, I think it would be awfully exciting to encounter a ghost. Who wouldn't? But I believe the chances of it happening are so slim as to be virtually non-existent. The only thing that really frightens me, and the reason I'm so resistant to embracing fantastic beliefs, is that I'm afraid that we as a species will slide back into another age of ignorance and superstition, giving up all the progress we've worked so hard to achieve. But on a personal and more immediate level, I suppose I simply like to imagine I'm smart enough that I don't allow myself to get suckered into believing nonsense.
Posted by: Dave | Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 05:39 AM
I don't understand why this is news and why this is on this site. All of these sorts of shows have been around for years.

Actually, if I saw chairs moving of their own accord, I'd be very much interested in determining the cause. Ghosts, however, would strike me as the least likely explanation. Also, you realize of course that if chairs really do move around by themselves where you work, you could make loads of cash? I'm sure quite a number of people would love to investigate such a claim. Call the folks at The Skeptical Enquirer. Hell, call James Randi. He'll give you a million dollars!

Dear Dave (and all other non-believers), I am a smart, logical person; I have straight A's in all my college courses and I have a fair amount of common sense. I do respect your choice not to believe in earthbound spirits,; however, I do not appeciate being talked down to just because I do believe. You see, I have always had an open mind about it... having that open mind has led to several personal experiences. (Keep in mind that I have never been a drinker or drug user and I am not prone to schitzophrenic delusions or hallucinations.) I just happen to be able to remain open-minded with a safety net blocking the hole so that my brain remains within its natural cavity. Even the hardest of skeptics cannot deny that there are unexplaiable events all around us... even if you do not see the supernatural possibilities. As for my personal experiences, many of them could have logical explanations, had they been investigated. But there were a couple of things that I saw that had no other explanation. I understand being doubtful until you've had your own experience; however, you will never have that amazing chance if you walk around with an attitude of pure dubiety. Please, express your beliefs freely, but do not pass off all adherents as uneducated fanatics! Your comments may be brimming with acuity, but in a battle of wits, some of us specter schmucks could wipe the floor with you and your overinflated sense of brilliance!
Posted by: brandy | Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 08:25 PM
Brandy, it wasn't my intention to come across as condescending. I try to be respectful. But I also call it as I see it. Let me respond to some of your points.
"I do respect your choice not to believe in earthbound spirits..."
I accept the possibility that such things might exist. But possibility and probability are two different things. I believe the probability that ghosts (or any other supernatural entities) exists is so small as to be virtually non-existent.
"...having that open mind has led to several personal experiences"
It shouldn't make a difference that you have an open mind. Either these experiences happen or they don't. If having an open mind is a necessary part of the equation, then there is something wrong with the formula. Why can't I, as a skeptic, ever see a ghost? I'd certainly enjoy seeing one. And, really, who better to impress than a skeptic? Appearing before a believer? *pfft* Where's the fun in that? Not much of a challenge. If a ghost really wants to scare the crap out of someone, it should appear before a non-believer. Much more satisfying, I should think.
"Even the hardest of skeptics cannot deny that there are unexplainable events all around us... even if you do not see the supernatural possibilities"
Of course there are unexplainable events. We're only human, and our knowledge is limited. And I do see the supernatural possibilities. It's just that I think such explanations are the least likely origin of any given phenomenon.
"But there were a couple of things that I saw that had no other explanation."
Just because there's something you can't explain, that doesn't mean you need to insert the supernatural in as the cause. You might just have to accept the fact that at the present time you simply can't fill in the gaps of your knowledge or understanding.
"however, you will never have that amazing chance if you walk around with an attitude of pure dubiety."
So ghosts only appear to those who believe in them? Dunt make sense. I think it's more likely that, since you already believe in ghosts, you interpret an unusual experience in those familiar terms. You see what you want to see. Or you see what you expect to see. But that doesn't mean there's not a natural explanation.
"but do not pass off all adherents as uneducated fanatics"
I don't think believers are stupid. Just ignorant, in that they are untrained to examine things in a critical and scientific manner. It's not really their fault. We live in a culture which still embraces supernatural beliefs, which is still overly fond of its ancient superstitions. It's difficult to break free of this mindset. Even in the 21st century, we yet live in a demon haunted world.
"Your comments may be brimming with acuity"
Thanks...I think?
"...but in a battle of wits, some of us specter schmucks could wipe the floor with you and your overinflated sense of brilliance!"
You're very well spoken, and probably more intelligent than me. It's not like I think I'm some sort of genius or anything. Far from it. Still...I'm right and you're wrong:P
Posted by: Dave | Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 05:42 AM
"I don't think believers are stupid. Just ignorant, in that they are untrained to examine things in a critical and scientific manner."
This is a disprovable assumption, and one might say you're ignorant for making it.
Posted by: WZ | Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 08:59 AM
*shrugs* Okay, then. It just seems to me that if you examine something with a critical and scientific mind, and are honest enough with yourself that you don't allow previously held superstitions to cloud your judgment, then the light of reason should melt away all notions of the supernatural.
Posted by: Dave | Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 02:30 PM
See, I tend to find if you are willing to investigate with an open but rational mind, you'll disprove most notions of the supernatural, which is why the ones that remain are so intriguing.
I don't think fanatical scepticism is any more rational or helpful than fanatical belief is. Nor do I think it is really scientific (or honest - fanatical sceptics cling to their own preconceived notions, as well).

David:
Since you put a story, I'll put one.
There's this one show that I happened to find a clip of on youtube, and it's pretty funny.
This woman is throwing stuff across the room saying "throw it back if you're here!!" Well, all of a sudden, one of the rocks or whatever comes flying back after she throws it, and of course, they all scream and run away. WELL, if you look closely, you can see that the rock she threw actually hits a pillar (sp?) that's right in front of her, and bounces back, only it's too dark for her to see that. its pretty funny, i've try to find it again...

OK, I don't look for ghosts, and I'm freaked out all the time, but I do believe they exist. Never did until I saw one where I used to work. I don't think anyone really believes unless they have an experience of their own. I think the ghost hunter shows are stupid and made up, but people who have seen a ghost themselves tell a convincing story.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Smoking in the Rain"
Two old ladies were waiting for a bus and one of them was smoking a cigarette. It started to rain, so the old lady reached into her purse, took out a condom, cut off the tip and slipped it over her cigarette and continued to smoke.
Her friend saw this and said, "Hey that's a good idea! But, what is that thing you put over your cigarette?"
The other old lady said, "It's a condom."
"A condom? Where do you get those?"
The lady with the cigarette told her friend that you could purchase condoms at the pharmacy. When the two old ladies arrived downtown, the old lady with all the questions went into the pharmacy and asked the pharmacist if he sold condoms. The pharmacist said yes, but looked a little surprised that this old woman was interested in condoms, so he asked her, "What size do you want?"
