The driver got out of the car to check on the girl and was confronted by several people. When they began to assault him, the passenger got out of the car to help and was attacked -- and killed. (AP via Houston Chronicle)

Oh, I'm sure that helped the toddler get medical help quickly. Way to go!
What an awful moment in human experience.

That is why I don't stop when I hit kids with my car. If kids don't want to be run over then they should stay off the sidewalks.

"Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a city-sponsored Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred"
Says it all right there.

Did the driver try to leave? Was he being reckless/careless and/or did the child run out in front of him? Was he cussing out the child when he got out to check on it?
Need more info...
//Swarthy - Juneteenth in Texas has to be seen to be appreciated! lol

Hey look, I guess beating drivers is a bit of a Juneteenth tradition!
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=622207
The city's Juneteenth festivities were marred by violence Tuesday, after a man was pulled from his car and beaten and a police officer injured while trying to break up a large-scale fight after the festival let out.
It was the second year in a row that police in riot gear were used to disperse the crowds.

Here's a close-up shot of the tribal celebrants:

Definately need more info. I'm curious of the racial make-up of the crowd that killed this man. Kid wasn't even injured, freakin' savages.
The kid ran accross the access-way to an apartment complex while a car was turning in. Where were the child's parents? Wouldn't a good parent mind a 3 or 4 year-old in a crowd by a street?
Austin is the only civilized portion of Texas...I'm sad to see this happen there.

"Some people think the violence takes away from the real meaning of Juneteenth."
Oh my...the jokes write themselves.
Posted by: SwarthyTroll | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 01:04 PM
Thing is, it wouldn't be Juneteenth unless someone somewhere got hurt. Sad, but true.
Posted by: Amy Gdala | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 01:08 PM
It shouldn't be too hard to figure who the players are - Juneteenth sounds like ex-slaves who want to wallow in the past.
It will be interesting to see how long before someone out of that crowd come forward to point out the culprits.

Interesting video. It appears the mob pulls one driver out of an automobile and, after kicking him, wrestles him into a giant kettle:

Didn't something similar happen in Chicago a year or two ago?

Look, all the racists gathered in one spot. How heartwarming.
Posted by: WZ | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 01:36 PM
What's heartwarming about racists beating a man to death over an accident? That actually seems pretty hateful and sickening to me.
Posted by: SwarthyTroll | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 01:38 PM
So if we accept Bluntfact's idea that 'black people commit group violence due to heredity' can we commit that 'white people start unwinnable, unjustified and honor-less wars' by heredity? 'Cause we've got plenty evidence of the last one in the Korean War, Vietnam War and the Iraq Occupation.
I guess not owning that nice car and house as seen on TV can get PWT pretty worked up and ready to blame anyone for their lack of success.
Sheesh.
Posted by: Sean, Torrington CT | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 01:39 PM
While Blunfact's views are... odious at best, there is definitely a racial element here that needs to be addressed. The victim was hispanic. The crowd was almost certainly all black. If a hispanic mob, or worse yet, a white mob, had done likewise to a black victim, the outlash would be devastating. I'd like to hear some more facts, but when a mob pummels an innocent man to death that's pretty much all you need to know.
Not saying its heredity or inherent or anything. But to pretend there are not some serious questions here would be blind.

Great post, elchampino...spot on.
Personally, I found the assclown that posted on another thread that women's brains are smaller than men's and that their only purpose in life was to reproduce alot more offensive than anything I've read on this thread.
Posted by: pnwgal | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:08 PM
I think Oxhead's spot on.
And to use an incident like this to make a racist grandstand as so many posters have is disgusting, especially to say it's some kind of inborn trait... I can't see how that's not offensive.
Posted by: WZ | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:10 PM
'*sigh*

Because of the article or the postings? Could go either way. Whether the hateful comments are about another race or another sex, they still scream ignorance.
Posted by: Detritus | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:24 PM
Here's one for you, WZ: "Jihadists are all muslims". Is that "racist"? Identifying something for what it happens to be is both accurate and honest. Not all muslims are terrorists, but there is an overwhelming propensity for violence; subjugation of women and murder among muslims when compared to, say, the inhabitants of Norway, Iceland or Sweden (unless an individual happens to be a muslim émigré in these nations). You are entitled to your own opinions- but not your own facts. Blacks in this country are responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime. That is fact. Facts are not racist. I will propose that an apologetic, excuse-mongering mindset tends to make matters worse in that it creates fertile ground for the indoctrination that breeds black resentment and this can result in whites, hispanics or asians being pulled out of their autos in black neighborhoods and being pummeled to death.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:42 PM
"Crusaders are all Christians".
Give it up PMN, or should I say, PWT!
Posted by: Sean, Torrington CT | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:45 PM
Give it up, Sean. Your assertion is flawed. Christianity today is not what it was. There are no more Papal armies. Reformation was possible within Christianity. Islam today is where Christianity was one-thousand years ago.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Are you trying to say only Muslim fanatics kill in the name of their religion? Honestly?
Bwahahaha!
Posted by: WZ | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 02:56 PM
A muslim fanatic, if he (or she) were bent on murder, would unlikely kill for Hinduism- so if it were "in the name of their religion", I'd suppose it would be in the name of islam. You've a sparkling intellect, WZ.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:01 PM
Oh, you aren't that obtuse, darling.
Religious fanatics kill in the name of their religion. The Muslims hardly have that market to themselves, even now, and you know it.
Posted by: WZ | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:04 PM
Okay, WZ, here's the football. Now run with it. List all the instances involving fantatics of relgions other than islam engaging in mass murder with the number of attacks and victims. I'll get you started. Islam has carried out more than 8646 deadly terror attacks since 9/11. The week through June 9th to June 15th has included 66 jihad attacks; claimed 345 lives and critically injured 343. Now, WZ, run me some numbers with all the details. I'm looking forward to it. You have the floor.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:23 PM
WOW!!!
How did religion get into this story? A bunch of asshats killed an innocent man. That is what the story is about.
Posted by: The Asshole Guy | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:24 PM
Pmn, it is you who have your fact wrong. Blacks, as you put it, are disproportionatley accused of crimes that they often, and I do mean often, did not commit. There have been so many cases in the last five years of DNA disproving a convict's involvement in crime. Many victims are fast to accuse minorities of crimes they did not commint--Susan Smith, for example--so that the minority is arrested on trumped up charges. And evidence is used in such a way that they make the criminal fit the crime. In other words, they use bogus evidence or they use actual evidence in a bogus way. Either way, black men, especially, are frequently tried and convicted for crimes they did not commit. I have a degree in Criminal Justice. Do you want to argue further?
The rest of you. Your racist bs is sickening. You imply that the Juneteenth celebration was attended by only black people. I happen to know that many open minded people of different races attend because they want to learn more about the plight of slaves. Apparently, you all have closed your minds to learning anything about anything other than hate. You make me sick to my stomach.
Posted by: lowercase becky | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:25 PM
One other thing: can any of you prove that this was a black child that was hit? And that it was a black mob that beat the man to death? I didn't read anything in the article to support that. It also didn't mention the race of the driver that hit the child. The only mention of race in any way was the hispanic surname of the passenger. For all we know, the driver could have been a black man, a chinese man, polish, or jewish. It doesn't say. So, did I miss something? If there are pictures, where are they? I'd like to see them.
Posted by: lowercase becky | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:30 PM
lowercase becky, "racist" is a top-shelf pejorative that doesn't work with me. I'm interested in Truth, not your scatter-brained opinions (to which you are entitled, by the way). As for your "degree in Criminal Justice", this would preclude you from being misguided, ill-informed or just plain delusional? Mike Nifong, who I suspect may be one of your criminal justice heroes, was until recently a part of your exhalted judicial system. By the way, from which community college did you obtain this degree of yours.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:37 PM
TAG, it's the way of the OS&RR threads...discuss the topic at hand, then tangent out.
You know, when a church gets defaced, or God/Jesus/religion in general is mocked in print or art, my pastor usually doesn't call for a jihad from the pulpit. And when asshats who do kill in the "name of God" are usually called out and condemned by the religious movement in general.
I'm sorry, but I find nothing peaceful in a religion that is intolerant of other faiths, that subjugates its women and doesn't speak up when their own kill hundreds of thousands...all in the name of their god.
Posted by: pnwgal | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 03:49 PM
This violence is really more an idication of group mentality and has nothing to do with race. If you put a group of anyone together and give them a focus, anonymity and the feeling that they are supported in their violent inclinations and you're going to get a mob.
A mob doesn't need to be homogeneous either. Look at the story about the cyclists who attacked the woman in the car. There was a focus, a big crowd of like minded individuals and a level of anonymity in that nobody was going to narc on the perpetrators. What resulted was a woman who's car was trashed, no specific knowledge as to who broke what and a group of people on OS&RR discussing whether she deserved it or not.
You look at any culture and you'll find instances where groups of peaceful people turn into raving mobs.

With perhaps one exception, lowercase becky? When you are the one hurling the epitaphs and invectives?
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 04:34 PM
I failed to mention in my earlier post, that this goes for farts too. This phenonemon is often referred to as the "He who smelt it dealt it affect." When one is in a crowd and fairly sure of anonymity one is more inclined to let 'er rip regardless of the impact on children and small animals.
Posted by: Kghoti | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 04:34 PM
LCB can I just beat the crap out of them for you then?
People only resort to name calling and personal attacks when they no longer can make a valid point or say something intelligent.
And me wanting to beat/kick the crap out of someone is just who I am. There are plenty of people I see everyday in the real world that just need a good old fashion ass whooping.
Posted by: The Asshole Guy | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 04:39 PM
Wow. Look out. Say a little too much and ones post is deleted. No problem. I shall enjoy the responses and comments.
To Jim: utter disappointment. I thought you were above the rest of the internet. Obviously I was wrong. At least I know you will read this before you delete it.
Posted by: Bluntfacts | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 04:46 PM
Bluntfacts, you now have a poster in this thread threatening to "beat the crap out of them". As to whether a particular post is deleted or not- the criteria is apparently selective. Threats will stand. It's all a matter of to whom they are directed. As for JIm- he can do as he pleases. This is his little corner of the internet.
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 05:10 PM
I don't know what creed or color these people were but, I bet you a million they were drunk or high. No one was watching a 3 year old kid running across a parking lot. They didn't even beat the guy who was driveing the car. In short, big party, lots of booze..wild mob behavior. What a shame for the poor man who was killed. Maureen

LCB loves TAG for threatening posters. I'll pay for the date should the couple like to go out and pull people from their cars for some more of what LCB loves TAG for. I can see it now: After battering a sufficient number of innocent drivers, LCB leans over to TAG and says: "That'll 'bout do it honey. Let this one go. I love you for it. Wash those pesky teeth and blood off your fists. It's Juneteenth and I'm hot for you. You're a sweet guy."
Posted by: PMN | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 05:30 PM
bluntfacts and PMN
Jim deletes the comment(s) that started the bickering but usually doesn't delete the responding comments (time constraints is my guess).
I've had some of my comments deleted, thankfully before others noticed I'd posted.
If it were my site, run like this without heavy-handed filters and without secure registration, I wouldn't allow anything that encourages an internet bitch-fight, either. Using hot-button language does not encourage debate or further any discussion, and only merits the responses seen here. If that was your goal, then you met it. You're entitled to your opinions and we'd love to hear them (or I would, even if the others would not). You don't have to be 100% PC--in fact, that's rather nauseating. But to be 100% non-PC just isn't on.
As this is Romenesko's site, he wins.
Posted by: Soo | Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 05:41 PM
Well PMN, LCB is in a wheelchair. So she cannot just beat the crap out of people as easily as I can. She is also married and lives over 3000 miles away from me. I have no love interest in this woman.
There are a lot of times I do not agree with her or understand her view point. We have butted heads more than once but I do respect her.
If I disagree with her I will at least retort with facts and not with name calling. I will not retort with stupid remarks either. She has my respect and I will give it to her.
Now others I will resort to name calling because they do not give respect to others nor will they show respect to others regardless of what is said, even when proven wrong.
I do not care what others think of me, I don't care if you think I'm the biggest asshat in the world. That is your right and you are entitled to it.
BTW, LCB does not need my help. She is a big girl and she can hold her own. I just felt like being the asshole that I am and offer services.
