US marshal sues because he can no longer smell meth labs
He blames the maker of a popular cold remedy for no longer being able to use his sense of smell to detect a working meth lab. He says he's endangered in his job and will continue to be so. (Charleston Daily Mail)
See, I would have guessed it was the prolonged exposure to meth labs that did his sense of smell in.

" Matrixx convened a scientific advisory board in 2004 to study the claims and found that they largely lacked scientific merit." . HELLO!!!! This is the company being sued. Of course they would not find any problems. They funded and staffed the study. How about an independent study of it. Most studies show that whatever is being tested usually okays the product that is the funding source of the study. I really doubt if all these people are making it up.

Never believe a cop. I'd say it was his over-use of cocaine confiscated from drug dealers that did his sense of smell in.

OK----He can;t find a meth lab anymore, so transfer him to the aiprot and let him screen passengers.
He can probably do that job a lot better than your average person who can't handle the foot-odor.

It is always nice to see that Sean hates everyone on an equal level :-)

He should have used Sudafed instead of Zicam...oh, wait, never mind.
Posted by: Violent Acres | Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 08:29 AM
Oh no, I *really* hate cops. Especially the so-called 'good cops' who never seem to out their corrupt and abusive co-workers.
Where's the cop outrage?
:P

This is why I hate college kids.

the worst part is, the cop went home and thought his wife left him a pile of brownies in a paper bag on the front porch and lit it just to keep them warm.

can't he just get a trained Toucan?

I have never heard of US Marshals being involved in the busting of meth labs. Us Marshals handle the transporation of prisoners and courthouse security. They do have a special unit but its small and is used for warrant service sometimes and to assist in dignatary security. Never ever found a US Marshal involved in what is a local, state and DEA duty. Me thinks he is tired of being a US Marshal and wants to be a postal worker, that is his salary comes in the mailbox. All of that wrapping himself in the flag and danger seems bogus to me. He is after a buck and in the worst case he is from WV and can now date those sweaty farm girls.

Well I am in the CompSci Masters program at a local university, so I suppose I'm still a 'college kid' even though I am 33 and own my own home.

Get a job, college hippie libertarian libertine kid.

I wonder how I knew that....hmmm....

sean, normally i think your arguments are well thought out. but in this case your position is just as comical and unreasonable as the person calling you a hippie.

I protest! we have no evidence of any kind that Sean O'Torrington is a libertine. For the love of mike, buy a dictionary.

I have my reasons to dislike cops...several reasons.
I wonder why KH hates college students so much? I suppose because they challenege his notion that authority is to be trusted and depended upon.

i have my reasons to dislike black people, reasons that involve guns and my wallet. I don't let my run ins with assholes affect my opinion of a people as a whole.
i know cops aren't a race, but their a category you can lump people into. and when you make sweeping judgements about people using one criteria to do so, you become the asshole.

UCB: someone's OCGD (obsessive-compulsive grammar disorder) got the best of them.

Don't drug-sniffing dogs eventually become addicted to the drugs they're trained to sniff out?
Posted by: Soo | Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 04:32 PM
I hadn't heard that, but I suppose it's possible? Do dogs have the capacity to become addicted to drugs?? Hmm. Now I'm getting mad. Use a dog to sniff drugs and then have him/her go through withdrawals when they are retired. Seems a little cruel to me. I don't really believe they become addicted. If that's true, why wouldn't the ASPCA get involved? Soo, why did you have to bring that up? Now I'm going to worry about it all night. I may have to go to the matress store down the road and spend the night eating popcorn and pizza and watch some tv!

"I wonder why KH hates college students so much? I suppose because they challenege his notion that authority is to be trusted and depended upon."
Actually, because they always spout the same sort of cookie-cutter anti-establishment cliches, and pat themselves on the back for being original thinkers (unlike the deluded masses of course).
Your post regarding "worker-consumers" yesterday had me busting up.

The mother of my daughter's friend found out I was medicating her for ADHD and thought she should intervene. She brought tons of stuff she had printed off the internet, the funniest being that Ritalin was a government conspiracy to turn all the kids of the US into mindless robots. I told her I thought that was what Cartoon Network was for. She actually made a note to cancel her cable.
Then I told her that rather than worry about one parent giving one child medication, she should instead be worrying about all those growth hormones given to cows, that surely it gets into the milk supply and then into hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Cheese, milk, yogurt, pudding, ice cream.... She nearly passed out. As she was leaving, I felt I had done my civic duty to wind up the weirdos of the world.

This just in:
PlanIt Plus, a career planning site, declares that sniffer dogs do not become addicted. They don't offer any research on that, but here's their site:
http://www.planitplus.net/careerzone/areas/?PID=nf&SECL=2WA&ID=557
England's Customs division also says they do not become addicted, and that they are usually retired after 7 human years. Email me if you want the site. It's too long to post here.
So you can "sleep" at home tonight, UCB. Sorry if I've disappointed you. You can still have the popcorn if you want!

New concern, Soo. Why do these freakin' links have to be so bleepin' long?
Like my new username? The old one seemed to be attracting the wrong kind of attention Didn't care much for that! I may change it again. Maybe to something much more subtle. I'll have to give it some more thought.
Back to the topic for a moment. I thougt that the U.S. Marshall could work any crime in any jurisdiction, including narcotics. Aren't they like on the tougher to break cases? Think I'll check that out.

just go with lcb :D
Soo, I have issues with using any...ANY medication that messes with the brain.
BTW, that includes some fever medicines that (if I'm not mistaken) by shuting down a certain part in the brain that makes the body overheat or something. Have to go back and read those fine-print-documents they have stuffed in the boxes.
Not that I haven't used them in really bad situations, it's just that I don't jump at them for any small reason.
Believe it or not, that includes asthma medication where I've weaned myself and a couple of my kids off the meds by taking them only when extremely needed.
The body adapts.
Trust me.
Uhm...but don't go killing yourself please, i.e. do not try this at home...blahblahblah.
Ace.

Grammernazi:
---------
The spelling judgment is found in the Authorized Version of the Bible. However, the spelling judgement (with e added) largely replaced judgment in the United Kingdom in a non-legal context. In the context of the law, however, judgment is preferred. In the U.S. judgment strongly prevails. As with many such spelling differences, both forms are equally acceptable in Canada and Australia, although judgment is more common in Canada and judgement in Australia.[1] In New Zealand the form judgment is the preferred spelling in dictionaries, newspapers and legislation, although the variant judgement can also be found in all three categories. In South Africa, judgement is the more common form. See further at American and British English spelling differences.
-----------
But the real question is....who cares?
and yes, e=a, I know :p
Posted by: Ace | Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 03:26 AM
I'm with Ace on this one, I refuse to take any meds unless its an extream case of something (i.e. I need perscriptions for strep) the body does adapt plus I find a lot of natural ways to help my immune system stay at full power. The body does adapt if you allow it. And no I'm not some all natural person I get my share of junk through the food I eat I just dont like meds or doctors.

I have a dog that is totally addicted to her ball. Does that count?

Oh KG, I just KNEW you were a good little cog. The sentiment is true, even if the words are old, and I don't recall implying that I was the first person to think those thoughts! There are many things in our society that should change, and I'll not be dissuaded by a bitter old joe-jobber.
Why not harrass the religious folks for not comming up with a new alternative to 'god bless'? You'll get more of a rise out of them.

Sorry, late getting back to the party.
You don't like the meds, that's fine by me, it's a free country.
As for the body adapting without meds, let's consider this for a few moments.
I have a friend who is fit (except for the smoking), trim, eats healthy foods, and has a cholesterol level nearing 300. Does she forgo medication in hopes her body adapts to that level?
What about my kidneys which are self-destructing, causing my high blood pressure, which speeds up the self-destruction of my kidneys and liver, all of which was not caused by overweight, addictions, or other bad habits? Do I forgo medication to control the blood pressure, or do I sit tight hoping my body adapts to the reduced kidney function and additional heart strain?
Does my child sit alone with me 5 days a week, trying to learn advanced mathematics and science, art and literature, grammar and history, music and gym class, all the while hoping that she can "adapt" to her natural state and not frustrate and frighten every living soul who comes near her?
Do you know how hard it is to sit alone with the same child day in, day out, trying to keep this child excited about learning when she is aware that "all the other kids" get to hang out together at school?
Do you have any idea how hard it is to console a child because an entire schoolyard of peers shuns her and calls her a freak?
There isn't a successful "home" remedy for her ADHD, because each person is different. We've tried every reasonable suggestion. Sometimes you have to sleep with the enemy.
