Men from "indigenous nation" claim diplomatic immunity
The four guys contend they're part of Abannaki Indigenous Nation, over which the U.S. has no authority. They were still arrested. One man had phony diplomatic license plates, say police. (Trentonian)
You know, the article looked reasonably well-written until the end where its author just tossed the word "Muslim" in there seemingly willy nilly. I actually went back and searched through the rest of the article to see where I missed the original reference to Islam.

I just wonder if they have unicorns to drive them around.

I see what you mean, Beav. It was a bit confusing. Do you suppose that we should make the connection because one of the suspects had a Mid-Eastern sounding name? The others had Anglo names.

Well, you know, when you go changing your name from Wilbert to Ashir you're just asking for trouble... and possibly an Islam inference.

This is the Trentonian we're talking about. The same newspaper that earlier in the week had a picture of Jim McGreevey's head photoshopped on Martha Stewart's body with the headline "Mr. Mom" on its cover.

It seems pretty clear to me that the group is Muslim, and the the writer showed restraint (given today's atmosphere) by not emphasizing this and only mentioning it at the end of the article. Did I fail reading comprehension?

I guess I have two questions/issues about it. First, if you are going to point out a group as a "Muslim group," you should do so when introducing or defining the group. (i.e. "Nation of Islam, a Muslim group founded in...)
Second, the term "Muslim group" implies that being Muslim has something to do with what the group does. If I meet some of my friends for poker, it turns out we're all Americans, but you wouldn't call us an "American group;" we're just playing poker.

Less Islam and more New Age, with people from Mars and whatnot. Waaaay more New Age.
But there really was an Abennaki tribe, so why did they steal the name of a real indigenous group?

Presumably to add some credence to their claim?

I found their website and a myspace blog. I didn't see anything Muslim, rather devoted to Hip Hop and black culture. Does have an anti-USA page.
As to the Muslim reference, the reporter isn't calling them a Muslim group, he's reporting what the police are saying about them. So I suppose it must be true, because the police are never wrong, nor prejudiced.

Anon,
Are you the same Anon who posted a rant to my blog last night? I'd be glad to discuss the issue with you, if you like.

An all caps rant with some knee-jerk jerk using "retarded" as an insult.
What research is required? What don't we know that we should? What in the hell justifies you using a medical condition as an insult and then acting as if you have the higher ground - let alone your obnoxious "shouting"?

Dear Anon:
Your retorts just don't make sense, considering the topic (a group of people claim to be members of a lesser-known tribe, and therefore should receive diplomatic immunity). Maybe I'm the rider on the "special yellow bus," but I don't see the connection.
Also, may I recommend a refreshing lavender enema to help you work through your obvious anger issues.
Warm regards,
Soo
