Walmart says Sandy McMillin was asked to put a shirt on over her bikini top because of complaints from other shoppers, not because of any concerns over health regulations. McMillin, who is considering a lawsuit, believes she was asked to put on a shirt over her bikini top for two reasons: "Because I’m disabled; and
I'm not a skinny, mini miss thing, and I have that middle-age spread."

After laughing at hundreds of 'People of Walmart' pics, it is interesting to see that there actually WAS a line in the sand that couldn't be crossed.

Disabled is an accurate assessment of Sandy McMillan’s mental state

Did anyone verify that "she" is actually female? Because I'm not convinced... And that raises the question: If it were a dude, would HE have to cover up?
Posted by: CosbySweater | Friday, July 29, 2011 at 06:29 AM
Can I sue her? I just lost 50% eyesight in my left eye and I'm now totally blind in my right. For god sake woman. You need to coverup!!! Nobody wants to look at that!!! Nobody!!

After seeing her, I now realize why some people prefer picnic tables and family dogs!

I think joking about her appearance is just too easy. But from the article:
"McMillin, who said she used to race three-wheeled motorcycles at drag strips around the country, walks with a cane because of injuries sustained in three motorcycle crashes over the years, the most recent on Clear Lake Road in 2008, she said. She wears a brace on her left leg because of severe damage to her surgically repaired left knee, and she keeps her head shaved because it’s easier to care for after traumatic brain injuries sustained in a couple of the crashes."
She almost literally is a train wreck. But that's hardcore - she probably has bigger nards that most of the guys here.
Yes, she is scary looking. Even without a bikini top on. Do we all wish she'd take a little time and money to add a few square feet to what she wears? Yes. Would a wig/hat help? Yes.
But it comes down to that an employee took a little too much leash when other customers complained and not what managers may have done. And now it may cost Wal-Mart.
So, I think she was slightly wronged, but not enough for a big payout.

Businesses have a right to refuse to do business with people for a variety of legal reasons -- one of which is how they are dressed. Of course, that is why her lawyer is trying to spin this into an ADA claim and why WalMart is arguing it is related to her state of dress.
I am no fan of Walmart, but I tend to believe them here.

@Coog:
Greeks wear togas and they cover up more than that ugly thing was wearing.

i am 20 yrs older and look better than that, and *i* wouldn't wear a bikini top ,much less into walmart!

bald, fat and stupid is no way to go through life.
Posted by: toni | Friday, July 29, 2011 at 07:41 AM
But, on a side note, who thinks a bikini top is enough clothing (for a man or woman) to wear into a store? Probably someone dumb enough to race motorcycles and wreck so often that she caused permanent brain damage.
And, if 'bigger nards' means that you do stupid shite like this person, then I will keep my regular sized nards, thank you.

She wasn't asked to cover up because she was bald or disabled. She was asked to cover up because she was scantily dressed. If she'd worn a tank top, nobody would have cared ... and she'd still have gotten top billing on the "People of WalMart" website!
Having said that, though, all her attorney needs to do is queue up some photos from "People of Walmart" to show that she's hardly the only person showing far too much skin at Wally World, and point out that the other folks weren't harassed by management.

"considering a lawsuit" over this crap is all I need to know about where this woman is coming from.
Still: ladies, if you are going to bare skin, don't get pissy when some cretin ogles you.
men, if you want to enjoy the good in bikini's, you have to accept the bad and the ugly.

"I have that middle-age spread.""
"Middle age" is when your broad mind and narrow waist change places.
Posted by: Me (the original) | Friday, July 29, 2011 at 08:48 AM
Being middle aged has nothing to do with being overweight.
Its a health issue.
Makes me wonder if she doesnt do this on purpose to get a rise out of people.

P.S.
And 51 isn't middle age unless your living to be 110
Posted by: stevenvictx | Friday, July 29, 2011 at 09:07 AM
I would have ask her to cover up also:)
Posted by: b | Friday, July 29, 2011 at 04:06 PM
WTF?
Why?
WTF? again...
I have seen middle-age spread, and it didn't look anything like that.

I echo the posts of KDP and sigh.
As to using the "people of Walmart" website pics to aid in her defense....no dice from a legal standpoint. Her lawyers would have to prove that mgmt DIDN'T ask *them* to leave also, which is not possible....they may very well have been asked to leave, but didn't make an issue of it and complied.
No one cares that she is disabled. Walmart more than any store I know CATERS to disabled people, and welcomes them. But they have to be dressed appropriately, which means more than a bikini bra as a "top" (which it isn't, unless you're on the beach or at the pool or a friend's backyard....not at a public shopping venue that posts attire requirements.
