1. Yes, it is a complete double-standard, if this was a guy and we were talking about teenage girls, then we would [and rightly] want to have him keel-hauled.

2. There would be a huge line of 14 & 15 year old guys looking to hook up with Ms. Hummer... with our without the extra gifts.

3. Never trust kids not to blab. This applies to both boys and girls. Granted this is not how this story played out, but is worth keeping in mind.

Sometimes a lawyer recommends a plea of no contest (nolo contendere) because it can be less damaging in any civil lawsuits that arise from the same conduct. This can be a needless precaution, however. Remember, OJ beat the criminal charges but still got tagged in civil litigation.

As to "the double standard"; It's NOT so cloudy as WE seem to want to make it. There are Lots of cultures where this is Nothing exceptional for the teen girls to have an older guy husband.
THIS, then is the Western SIN... that a 42 yo Woman takes younger partners. Of course, it might also be argued that it is based in a sense of Female Empowerment that doesn't exist in those other cultures.
While Decidedly NOT advocating the behavior, I am always left wondering where the culpability of the Teen Partner begins and ends. I mean, IF there is a Standard of TEEN behavior, as well as Adult behavior, then then in MANY of these cases the Teens DO bear some degree of responsibility.
I'm NOT arguing LAW here, I'm discussing the degree to which society can expect responsibility from 15 & 16 year olds to JUST SAY NO! The SAME standard that puts them in Juvie for being busted with Alcohol and Pot.

If its sex with an older person then its, "oh, they're just a child and was forced into it" but if they rob a store its "they knew what they were doing and should be held accountable". And there is a double standard, and male having sex with an underage person goes to prison for a long time, a female doing the same 99% of the time gets probation or very little prison time.
