The homeowners made a mistake, good for them the price paid was not too severe as it could have been far far worse.

Not so old a burglary method. A common twist is to break into someone's car that has their remote attached to the visor. Get their remote and address info and go to their house. Drive in, close the door and bust in the inside door. Rob and leave.
Moral of the story? Keep your remote well hidden.
