The student ended up being shocked so severely that his heart stopped. The lawsuit says , the electrical trades class teacher encouraged the boy to shock himself, even offering a Mountain Dew in exchange for doing so. New Hampshire Union Leader)
I used to live in Dover! I guess I'm glad I didn't go to high school there!

The claim of brain damage is dubious. All children are brain damaged.

the comments below the article are fun
WHO, at age 18, doesn't know that if you plug yourself into the wall socket you'll get seriously or even fatally shocked?

Down at Hussongs cantina in Ensanada Mexico, late in the afternoon when the people have been drinking a lot of beer and tequilla 2 guys come in with a car battery with jumper cables attached to it, and for 5 dollars you can jump yourself. I know, it sounds real stupid, but I swear these 2 guys have a line of drunk knuckleheads eager to prove how macho and tuff they are. When the place is packed they make a lotof money.

Eh, I've taken 120VAC up the arm more times'n I can count. It's not a big deal. Small children and people with heart trouble are the only ones who need worry about wall current through the limbs. I guess you could get burnt at the points of contact eventually.
Across the nipples, like that kid did, that's another story. The teacher was an idiot to allow that t'happen.
I'd have no problem generally with him encouraging kids to expose themselves to current, but it'd be much wiser to make sure the parents are informed of the (minor) danger and give permission, mainly in case one of the kids has a known heart problem. Nothing wrong with teaching kids not to be frightened of Magic Death Rays in their walls. That's of course assuming he teaches about the real hazards of electricity and how to avoid them (like being careful around big capacitors and not attaching leads to your damn nipples).

I hadda learn the hard way at 8 yrs. old. Grandpa said don't touch that and left the room. When he came back in I was on the floor just trying to sit up. All he said was "I told you NOT to touch it."

If I were on a jury, I would think that there was sufficient evidence of brain damage before the current was applied ...

It really depends on whether or not the teacher was aware of the activity, and especially if the teacher encouraged it. Assuming the opposite, how could he be expected to stop 18yr old mental defectives from hurting themselves, if they were determined to do so?

It's so good to know that are children are watched over by responsible adults during the day in storage.

You cant have brain damage without a brain.

@Phantom
I thought you were saying they would pay someone $5 to shock them... OH NO, people gave THEM $5 for the shock.
What idiots... but then tequila... nuf said.

Phantom- I have to call shenanigans on your story. 12V DC won't hurt you despite the many torture scenes the movies have given us. To even flow 1mA (roughly the threshold of sensation of DC current) at 12V DC your skin resistance would have to be at/below 12kOhms. Typical dry skin resistance is near a MegaOhm. Wet hands will still not typically get you below 100k.
Touch both posts of your car battery, you won't feel a thing, and if you do, it certainly won't be painful.

Forgot to add... 120VAC on the other hand, arm to leg/ground, it has to be really perfect conditions to injure you. Across the chest, not a good idea.

The real crime is that the paramedics revived him and you just know he is going to have 25 kids all of which will be as defective as he is.

@Adam
You can get one hell of a painful shock off of twelve.
It is current that kills you and a car battery is good for 60 amps and over.
The deadly range.
Off the top of my head it takes about 20 milliamps to start getting painful; 20 one thousands of an amp.
Somewhere between 60 and 120 milliamps your heart will stop.
Start going over an amp and you are causing permanent physical damage. (burns)
I have gotten a shock off of a twelve volt system, so I do know that is a possibility.
Here we are talking 120 volts 60 hz and really a damn stupid idea.
Yeah, I have gotten the f**k shocked out of myself before and every time you live through that sort of thing is your lucky day.

Sounds like he had brain damage before he was shocked ! Letting himself get shocked through the chest ...he doesn't need a teacher to tell him that's not a very good idea. He must've had the IQ of a 3 year old, not a high school student. Trouble is, he'll get rich from his stupidity.

Adam- Sorry, but a 12 volt car battery can put a serious hurt to you...Yes, this is spoken from experience....More than once I've been stupid enough to try working on my cars without disconnecting the battery--"Gee, it'll only take a minute..." and suffered from it...The worst one was one where I did what every shade tree mechanic will tell you never to do....I put a wrench on top of the battery...when I picked it up, I arced it across both terminals, and ZAPPO! Thank you blackened, charred hand!
