Study: More people would do without television than the Internet
That makes sense, of course, since you can watch TV shows on the web.

Hanky-panky in ballpark bathroom spoils dad/son's Opening Day

I watch all my TV on the internet now as I can watch it whenever I want. So yes, do away with the TV broadcasts!

My favorite line from Beavis & Butthead:
"I can't sleep without TV!"

I still like my OS&RR The Movie idea.
Scene One: Fade into Newscast with an OS&RR themed story.
Scene Two: Reenact highlights of said story
Scene Three: Cut to panel of on the scene corrspondents or a panel of officials (Like us, the commenters)
Scene Four: Surreal segue into next story.
You could intersperse other ideas into this format ala Monty Python or Mr. Show.

When you consider that a fast Internet connection is a much better value than cable TV because you can do a lot more with it and STILL watch TV with it, dumping cable is a no-brainer.
However, the supremacy of the Internet over cable TV is based on Net Neutrality -- that is, the principle that networks must treat all traffic the same and can't arbitrarily slow down or block certain types of content. It's no coincidence that Comcast has torpedoed it in court, at least for the moment. They know in their bones that they cannot compete with an unfettered Internet. They've followed the fine old American tradition of lawyering it to death. Bottom-feeding corporate whores like Glenn Beck are getting on the bandwagon and whipping the mouth-breathers into a frenzy against the "socialistic" level playing field of the Internet. It's all too predictable. Given a choice between innovating or trying to stifle the competition, big media companies go for the stifle every single time.

Until they make television programming which the most ignorant, hateful, and uninformed bigot can help craft behind the anonymity of a key board, it will remain so. Obama hates puppies.

Sounds like MST3K, Emp...Yes, I DID watch MST3K.
I think I would take internet over TV, as long as the sports bars kept the TV's. (Gotta see my games!)

Phranq: Demanding big corporate profits by hogging what (was) ostensibly publicly owned airwaves is the 'Merican way, traitor.
F@#k Comcast. I don't purchase their goods and services because I don't like the way they do business. If you guys feel the same way, I'd urge you to do the same.

We all have to pay more for less so a Large Corporation can remain profitable despite the fact that times change and folks' evolving media habits no longer requires as many large monthly payments to said Large Corporation. THAT is Socialism, folks.

Sille,
respectfully disagree--that's an example of a plutocracy, which is what we are living in now.
If you need to see a couple of hundred millionaires in the same room, just replay the State of Union address--one of them was calling the president a liar.

Th end of net neutrality will spend the end of all free markets, as if corporate capitalism hasnt nearly strangled it to death anyhow.

89 channels and nothing on.
The exception is here.

RMM- Careful, we can all see your geek streak. :)
Posted by: Emperor Norton the 1st | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 10:15 AM
Right on, BlueMary. It's a brave new world out there for Corporate America, a time when we socialize losses and privatize profits. Socialism like that is only bad when the peasantry are reaping the benefits.

S'okay, Emp...I like being a contradiction. I'm the former cheerleader-jockette who loves violent, bloody sports, head-banger music, reading books, and MST3K... I keep me entertained.

No you can't, my legs are crossed.

I loved MST3K and will gladly join RMM under the geek banner.

If you like MST3K you should check out Wizard People, the alternative audio track for Harry Potter.

Apology in advance.

The main MST3K guy was from Minnesota, right? When I moved to the Twin Cities in the late 90s, that show was ALL OVER the papers.
Posted by: Jim Romenesko | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 01:15 PM
Please forgive my ignorance.
What is MST3K??
Posted by: thomas | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 01:28 PM
Mystery Science Theatre 3000
It was the funniest show on cable...EVER!
Joel was being held captive by this evil entity who was trying to drive him insane by forcing him to watch B-Movies, so he invented these 4 robots, They wise-cracked their way through the movies (set up like you were sitting behind them in a theatre) and most times, you forgot you were watching a B rated movie, as you were laughing too hard at the comments... Good times. lol!

I watch all my TV on hulu.com
My iMac is bigger than my TV, and can do as much and more.

Try putting your tv in the bottom of the bird cage and you'll go back to news papers.
Posted by: The Hermit | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 02:20 PM
RMM is INCORRECT!
Those were not "B" movies! How could you rate "Hands of Manos" a "B"? It is quite possibly one of the worst movies ever made.
MST3K never ran a move rated higher than oh..."J" and most of them were squabbling for a rating lower than "Z"
Think "TORGO", "The Sidehackers" Those endless B&Ws that featured Coleman Francis jumping out of plane (unfortunatly for the movies he survivies)...all perfect gems of dreck.
Posted by: BlueMary | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 02:26 PM
RMM;
Thanks much. The abbreviation eluded me, as they often do. I was a fan. Admired the rapid fire reparte that always stole the show, and laughed at how robots and friend could get away with talking throughout a movie and make me focus on them alone. Kind of reminded me of Robin Williams on speed. ;>)

BlueMary- If I sent you a guitar track would you add vocals of your pants ditty?
Posted by: Emperor Norton the 1st | Friday, April 09, 2010 at 02:56 PM
Emp;
Steele Reserve on screen. Bad day better.
BlueMary;
If needed, would gladly help with your ditty.

I saw "Giant Spider Invasion" in a drive-in when it first came out. Best way to see that movie!

Mistake it not thomas and empN--The pants song is not mine. It is the product of the demented MSTies crooning from the Satellite of Love.
Created in tribute to PANTS in the middle of a screening of a Hercules pic which featured a Very Hairy Very MANLY MAN in a loin cloth climbing a rock face and a very, very unfortunate camera angle. Modesty (and a weak stomach) prevents further description.
But the song is winner, sort of marching band salute thing going on. I often find myself singing it proudly during car concerts--or in the morning when preparing for a day of honest toil.

BlueMary;
Some manly men aren't hairy at all. By choice.
Posted by: thomas | Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 02:59 PM
I would prefer both. Sometimes I just want to sit back and watch a bigger screen, rather than my laptop. This is a really good conversation though...

I would agree, you can always watch videos on the net.
