The St. Paul, Minn. council member told officials from Nagasaki -- the site of the second atomic bomb strike at the end of World War II -- that "my daughter is a roller girl who skated for the Atomic Bombshells, which is kind of interesting." Perhaps, but really!

He really dropped the big one!

Let's just remember why we dropped the bomb on them in the first place. They weren't the nicest people to the Chinese, either.
Remember Nanking, anyone?

I am not saying the a-bombs should not have been dropped. I know the history of that time. The Japanese had no intention of surrendering, even after the first bomb. After the second one, a faction of the military still tried to overthrow the military high command in an attempt to continue the war, hoping force the US and its allies to invade. Their defense plans are well known and documented. Millions of Japanese would have died, as well as a vast number of allied military men. Your point is well taken, Mark.

... and we named her 'Enola Gay' and her brother is 'Little Boy'.
Yeah, I know that refers to Hiroshima.

Sheila, read a history of the period. The Japanese had been trying to surrender for months. Of course they had defense plans, duh, that doesn't mean they weren't trying to surrender. Its well documented, the only condition was they wanted the emperor left in place (which we ended up doing anyway).
The reason Truman wouldn't let them surrender was a campaign promise he and FDR made in '44 that surrender would be unconditional. It was politics - American politics - that cause the needless deaths of all those people. ""It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were almost defeated and ready to surrender" - Fleet Admiral Leahy, chair of the Joint Chiefs during WWII. READ THE ACTUAL HISTORY!!!

Let's not forget the slip of the lip that Basil Fawlty made when the Germans came to the hotel.

I'm very much afraid that Truman's mistake will come back to kick us in the ass and blow up in our faces someday.

the bombs were dropped to prove to the 'commies' that the US would do it
every other excuse is BS

Did you here the joke about the Japanese businessman who got hit by both A-Bombs? No seriously, it really happened...http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/01/06/japan.bomb.victim.dies/index.html

"The Japanese had been trying to surrender for months."
That is UNTRUE.
There might have been a clique trying to surrender (and in fear of their lives), but it is well documented that men, children, women and anyone else breathing were preparing to sell their lives as dearly as possible, training to repel an invasion. The War party was still in power and the bombs saved thousands of American lives.
The statement above should have read "The Japanese had been fortifying their country for months in preparation for invasion and to kill as many Americans as possible."
The bombs saved the needless deaths of Americans.

FBatC is right. There were militant factions in the Imperial army who were actually fighting and dying other Japanese who wanted to surrender in order to prolong the war. Seeing were were at WAR American lives are the only ones which mattered. My Grandfather was on a boat on his way to invade the Japanese Home Islands when they dropped the bombs. The bombs ended the war without (much) further Americans killed. The bombs were good. I can't fathom all the revisionists crying over it. Why don't you take some of your own advice, Ronbo, and look at some of the US Military plans regarding the actual nuts and bolts of a potential assault on the HI's. Pay especial attention to the projected casualties of American serviceman. Traitor.

I'm kidding about the traitor remark but Truman made a decision to use a weapon that he though would (and dead) end a global conflagration that claimed 40-50 million lives. It's pretty easy to second guess that.
