Dear readers: After 13 years, I'm closing The Obscure Store
That is not necessarily a ringing endorsement.

Since plenty of college students have the emotional age of a 13-year old, he should fit right in.
Anyhow, I hope his accelerated learning comes genuinely from him, not from his mom being pushy. As for the SA trip, I'd have let him go. But it's the university's call. The African-American comparison is pretty silly, too. It's clear that he has quite a bit of maturing to do despite his intellectual gifts.

I can only hope this young man doesn't resemble the 18-year-old I was at UConn so long ago.

He is a brillant young man. I see no reason why they will not let him go.

I don't think they can stop him from going. This young man will do whatever he wants in this life. He is just beginning.

His very statement is indicative of the fact that no 18 year old's brain has gelled yet.
Not to mention the unpredictable composure of a sudden summer storm.

The university is worried about lawsuits--something goes wrong on the trip, mom sues, whoever greenlighted his participation is fired, a large sum of money changes hands.

if he's impressed by 18 yr olds, he should stay home

I hope that no 18 year old girls agree with him, lest they become sex offenders.

It will be only time before the ACLU(American Criminal Liberties Union ) will be involved... A protest anyone?

Saxo G,
Rumor has it that UConn wasn't yet founded when you were 18.

The kid is under 18, so the school would have to have legal power of attorney to take him out of the US. And that doesn't mean that any Country would still allow him to enter without a parent. I think Mom should be allowed to go along, but signing an agreement that she is there to watch all the kids, not just hers.

Sending kids to college at a young age is not always the best thing. Look at Seamus Farrow, Woody Allen's son. Mia Farrow bundled him off to college when he was a kid and he turned into a smug little prude. Of course, her brainwashing didn't help.

Tell him he can go if his mommy goes with him.

13 years old in college? Wow. I never made it to college until I was 15!

wank, I don't think you can use celebrities' offspring as test cases for anything.
On the other hand looking over the list of child prodigies, you get quite a mix -- from Leonard Euler (quite possibly the smartest guy who ever lived) to umm, let's see oh yeah, Dr. Ted Kaczynski (entered Harvard at 16, Sentenced to life without parole at 56)

It was there all right. And most of the dormitories even had indoor plumbing!
