Wisconsin Tourism Federation (WTF) decides to change its name
It's now the Tourism Federation of Wisconsin. "We didn't want [WTF] to detract from our mission," says the agency's spokeswoman.

Dear readers: After 13 years, I'm closing The Obscure Store
From the vaults of Wisconsin stories viewed here, it's impossible for me to conclude that this is anything other than the WTF state.

I agree with Thomas, the name (WTF) did suit them rather well.

I think the South Toronto Financial Underwriters need to see this article.

And if they were in Seattle, they could ride the South Lake Union Transit (a real item , BTW).

WTF is not an acronym. Chief's SLUT is, however.

They shouldn't have bowed down before a crutité.
Posted by: Torgo | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 07:17 AM
After 30 years with the same abbreviation, perhaps WTF could be considered as a trademark, or logo, or at least as intellectual property.
At .10 cents a whack, imagine the daily royalties.
Torgo is correct. No need for them to attempt correctness.

I read awhile back that Beaver University was considering changing its name because content filters kept their university from being googled. I think they just merged with another university instead.
Paying attention to initials is important. It took a little discussion, but we finally convinced my sister that tagging her unborn son with certain family names was bad for two reasons. One, no kid wants to be saddled with "Albert Steven." Second, his last name is "Scott."
Not thinking things through myself, I've saddled my kid with monogram initials that read "APE."

My current fave: Philadelphia Home Art Garden (PHAG)

Another Philly acronym: the FU Arena (First Union). The name is utterly appropriate -- my M-I-L worked for them after they gobbled up the bank where she'd previously been employed, and they were a miserable bunch of asshats even for a bank. The name was later change to Wachovia Arena after Wachovia ate First Union.

Ahhh Now I get it. That explains why the Fresno Area has no Rapid Transit.
Posted by: Bill | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 08:20 AM
@ Phranqlin,
please reassure me that the M-I-L does not have a first name that starts with the letter "F".

So what's the World Trade Federation going to do?
Posted by: LimeGreenLizard | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 08:27 AM
Lizard, they can and should keep WTF. It blends.
Posted by: RockyMtnMac | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 09:14 AM
Just to screw with them, we should make a concerted effort to popularize the phrase "Totally F'ing Whacked" and its subsequent acronym.
Posted by: Wrygrin | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 09:58 AM
@Bill -- nope, different letter.

Meanwhile, Florida smugly sits back, confident in the wisdom of naming a school the slightly longer, "University of Florida."

I don't think WTF will detract from their mission...only save people time having to say it themselves!
Posted by: jojo | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 11:37 AM
No matter what it stands for, WTF is NOT an acronym. Initials pronounced separately are not acronyms.
Posted by: Sheila | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Right, WTF is an initialism, not an acronym.
Posted by: mathman | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 01:07 PM
Exactly. SCUBA is an acronym, for example.
Posted by: LimeGreenLizard | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 01:32 PM
What's next? A state immediately north of TX changing their abbreviation because they're not merely OK?
Posted by: outofsalt | Thursday, October 01, 2009 at 01:43 PM
But they are merely Ok...and thats only on a good day...

"The terms initialism and alphabetism are neither widely used nor widely known. The term acronym is widely used to describe any abbreviation formed from initial letters."

Actually, Fresno does have a public transit system (FAT) but it is decidely not rapid.
