Robbery suspect doesn't want to get out of bed for his trial
Actually, the guy hasn't wanted to leave his San Francisco jail medical-cell bed for four months. He doesn't go to court, doesn't want to bathe and refuses to talk to his attorney. (San Francisco Chronicle)
So, give him what he wants and put him to sleep--permanently.
That was sarcastic, btw. I'm just clarifying this for MOM who is oblivious to sarcasm.

Ever heard of a wheelchair? Strap his malingering-ass in and push him to the courthouse. Plead guilty in absentia and move on.
In jail you may have up to 23 hours a day to sleep.

Good for him. Why should he play by the rules when the game is slanted against him? The best way to piss off authoritarians to to dismiss as insane all their crazy assumptions about society.

In California, does the defendant have to be physically present in the courtroom? In some courts, the defendant appears via live video.

Ah. In boot his stinky tush would have been dragged into the showers were he'd be cleaned with Comet and strub brushes and he'd learn to want to shower. Prison is so nice!

Don't bring him food. If he can walk to meals he can walk into a court room. If he does not walk to eat... problem solved.

He's depressed at how badly he's f'd up his life. And he's making it even worse.
Pump him full of Prozac.

He is clinically depressed.
He needs to be in the care of a psychiatrist.
Prison doesn't fix people, it only holds off dealing with the problem until they get out. And almost all of them eventually do, having been frozen in place for years, with no money, no jobs, no choice but to go back to coping the way that put them in prison in the first place.
Prison is a waste of taxpayers' money, or a welfare system for veterans who did not learn a trade while they were in the military. Which is a whole other kind of 'prison'.
