A Minnesota woman has been charged with third-degree murder for allegedly giving a man at least half her prescription pain patch to chew on in exchange for marijuana. He died by overdosing on Fentanyl, a powerful narcotic in the patch said to be dozens of times as strong as morphine. (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

Why would you need weed if your on a fentanyl patch?

Can't read the article, coming up page cannot be displayed...but believe it or not, the pain patch doesn't work as well as the ganj. When my mom was dying from cancer (smoking is bad. She got lung cancer from second-hand smoke), she was in constant pain and yes, had the patch. She also had pills called Marinol. Federally mandated weed, which were a BS dose. She used to joke about going down to the inner-city to get the "good stuff."
...one wouldn't think 23 would be middle-aged, huh?

First: kestrelmas, I offer my condolances on the loss of your mother. I re-read the article twice, but do not understand your reference to 23 being middle aged. DId I miss something? Please more info?
Second, and old friend of mine lost his son to suicide. He and his wife separated. Hse'd beeen in a bad accident and her Dr. prescribed her Demerol patches. He stole them and put them all on one night and left a note. Those things are time-released, so chewing on one would tox you up too far, too fast.

Awww... she was so concerned for him that she gave him only 1/2 a patch after he got sick from chewing on a whole patch. Then she drove him home and helped get him to bed. She is a saint.
I believe the reason she was "buying" weed with the patch was because she required a court-ordered mental health plan and medication.

This goes to show how people are dealing with PAIN in this country. Our government makes it difficult for people with honest to God real pain to get help and with all the laws being passed because of people like Jackson and Elvis, people with chronic pain have to get medicine any where they can. This is a serious issue, government and now doctors turn their heads while people with REAL pain have to deal with it on their own. I AM SURE THERE IS ORE TO THIS STORY THEN WE ARE BEING TOLD. CHRONIC PAIN IS A REAL KILLER IN THIS COUNTRY.Doctors and government need to help people. don't turn your heads and pass more laws harming the people.

The government has never 'helped' people who truly needed it. The government does not belong in health care. Prescription companies need to find a way to help the people who really need and Doctors need to figure out exactly who the 'real' vs the 'fraud' individuals are.

Dick is right. Fentanyl is serious stuff. Read this article. For pain relief, I don't see how marijuana can be considered to be in the same league.

The only thing the insurance execs, drug execs and other profiteers will do is find ways to get more money out of more people. Health care in America is the best, if you can afford it.

I'm in total agreement w/ Chad. I have suffered from excrucriating chronic pain due to Endometriosis(http://www.endometriosisassn.org) since I was 15. I have been on high doses of hydrocodone, oxycodone, methadone(it's also used for severe pain), promethazine(for nausea caused by high doses of pain meds and to augment pain meds), and fentanyl patchs. I'm extremly lucky that my daddy is a doctor so he can prescribe some of the pain meds and that he knows other doctors willing to prescribe the controlled substances. So many doctors have been intimidated, and in my mind bullied, by the FDA and other government agencies that many they are so worried about the possible repercussions that they have forgotten their duty to the patients! I understand that there is a HUGE problem with addiction to controled substances but there is also the huge problem of chronic pain! There ARE so many people with REAL pain that suffer because some people who are prescribed these meds choose abuse them.
As for the story... I do not think this woman should be charged with murder. Misuse of a controled subtance or selling a controled substance I would understand but not murder...it's not as if she forced him to chew it or something like that.
Kestrelmas- I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope knowing that she is no longer in pain is at least a small comfort.

23 is not middle age if life expectancy is 76 now...

That was a sad story, sometimes we don't know why it is happening to our society.

Fentanyl is a narcotic analgesic used in combination with other drugs before, during, or following surgery and also for chronic pain management.

Well, As I returned from a Southern Hemisphere holiday, where temperatures were nearly 40 degrees C, I was shocked by the unusually cold weather in the UK. The winters in the UK are usually much milder than this as we all know, so what is going on with the weather? If you don’t know already, read on to find out and to read 10 top tips on driving safely during the snow period.
In most winters, especially in the past 20 years or so, winds reaching the UK normally came from the south-west. This meant the air had travelled over the relatively warm Atlantic and we got mild conditions in the UK. However, over the past three weeks the Atlantic air has been ‘blocked’ and cold air has been flowing down from the Arctic or the cold winter landmass of Europe (Met Office) of course.

I extend my condolences to Gatti's Family. I hope they could find their justice as soon as possible.
May he now rest in the hands of our Creator.
