Dog is returned to family after disappearing nine years ago
The owner didn't know how Astro would react at their reunion. "They brought him out and he just sat down and licked both me and my oldest stepson," he says. "He was like, where have you been?" TCPalm.com)

Are you sure he wasn't like "You taste like chicken!"?

I love stories like this. Thanks for a good cry, Jim. Fortunately I don't have any co-workers around right now to see me wiping my face.

Oh, gee thanks for returning my geriatric dog to me. Hope he doesn't need a hip replacement any time soon.

I am not a German Shepherd fan, but that is one cute dog. They don't live that long, so this is still a sad story :(

Ok...they adopted the dog, had him for about 30 days when he disappeared. He isn't THEIR dog...he belongs to whoever has been caring for him for the past 9 yrs!

FINALLY--a story out of Port St. Lucie that doesn't involve some kind of freak show!
I'm guessing that once he figured out he had gotten lost from his owners, Astro's first thought was "Roh-roh, Reorge!".

After only having the dog for a month, nine years ago, my guess is the dog sat down, licked them both, and thought, "good someone's getting me out of this pound and taking me home." Period.

he could take ME home...

After licking himself Astro went on to tell a tale about how he was kidnapped by some guy named George and his wife Jane and they brought him to a futuristic world where he exercised on a treadmill hanging off the side of the house and awaited Elroy and Judy's return from school each day. Astro is now seeing a doggie counselor for evaluation.

Hmmm...the dog was micro-chipped, and it took 9 years to find him? I'm calling bullshit...If the dog was micro-chipped, it shouldn't have even taken 9 HOURS to find him!!!

Merc, a microchip is not the same thing as a GPS or homing device or anything like that. It doesn't "track" the dog in any way.
The dog has to first be seen and caught, then someone has to think to take it somewhere (either a shelter or a veterinarian's office) to have it scanned (there's no charge to do this) to see if it DOES have a chip, then check the microchip number in registry to see to whom the chip is registered. (As an aside: people who get their pets chipped but fail to register their contact info in the national database aren't accomplishing much.)

In other words, it's really no different than and identification tag worn on the collar, except:
1. It can't be lost in the woods or taken off.
2. The contact info can easily be updated electronically in a central location, unlike engraved tags which have to be totally replaced when ownership or location change.
and
3. It can't be seen from the outside (the only drawback)
It's a means of permanent identification...that's all. But that's often the critical thing in reuniting separated pals.
(I help with numerous animal rescue organizations when I have time.)
