While officers attempted to stop Veronica Hollifield, she refused several times, yelling "No!" At one point, a policeman ran alongside her car and was able to open the door and grab Hollifield's left arm. But that only strengthened her resolve. She put the car in reverse, revved the engine and rammed into the officer's squad car before roaring off.

What, was she a retired New York City cabbie?
Posted by: Phranqlin | Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 12:04 PM
That's when Hollifield headed outside, "climbed into her 1999 Toyota"
A 99 TOYOTA? I was expecting an 88 Olds or a 94 Lincoln, something more in the land-cruiser range.
Poor woman, dementia is a horrible thing.

And she was only 77. I want full video - complete with Benny Hill theme music.

Get off her a$$ - at least it wasn't 40 miles in the wrong direction!
You go Grandma!!

"In the end, Hollifield was handcuffed and taken into custody under the state's Baker Act. The law allows authorities to detain individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others"
She vandalized a church, fled from the police in her car, almost ran over some people and they needed the Baker Act to take her into custody? Kinda like getting Al Capone for tax evasion.

"Hollifield showed up at Our Lady of Hope church on Clyde Morris and created havoc in the lobby area. She knocked over chairs, a table and ripped a painting off the wall." Guess she was having an argument with God!

DO NOT PISS OFF A SENIOR CITIZEN!
I repeat....
DO NOT PISS OFF A SENIOR CITIZEN!
They are CRAZY!
I just returned from putting my father in a nursing home where my mother is already a patient. OMG!
My father had full priviledges within 24 hrs. & totally enjoys every benefit. My mother, who has been there for 4 months, can not visit my father's room nor eat with him in the open reception area because she refuses (obvious dementia) to OBEY the rules. (i.e. biting nurses, hitting everyone with the phone (removed) & etc.) She still can not figure out why she is restricted in where she can go....
But my father finally has some peace...He visits her 1 hr a day - that's his fill.
My mother's biggest complaint was that she is 78 years old & she can determine what she wears & where she goes, not the nurses.... Then on other days, she plays opossum & refuses to wake up, eat nor recognizes anybody. It's very sad.
(The Twilight Zone music fades in the background....)
But my father is doing much better!
My point is...this lady needs help...& sounds like my mother....
Do not mess with her....call in the family & get her the help she needs.

Did anyone else hear about the woman in CA who led police on a low-speed chase, while driving a U-Haul? Smacks of bad lesbian breakup gone awry!
Posted by: troschne | Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 05:19 PM
i am sorry to hear that about your mom. it happens when they realize they are losing their memory and can't stop the changes, they are basically losing control of their own lives...it is sad.
when your dad visits maybe he can just remind her once, if she will follow the rules( & they are rules for safety and not "punishment") she can eat with him and visit more. i hope it will get better for her.

she was 77.what was she thinking.thats wier to me for an oldder lady herself to run from the police.
Posted by: | Friday, January 30, 2009 at 08:31 AM
It is very sad to watch your parents in these situations. Mom is not aware that she's losing it. We (the children) try to remind mom that the rules are to protect her but she believes it is a conspiracy.
Mom claims that she called the FBI & that they sent a helicoptor to rescue her, but the nurses prevented her from escaping to the rooftop heli-port (which does not exist.
The lady in the article is probably as fearful as my mother. It is very real to them - terrifying, actually.
Fear, real or imagined, can make people do some really crazy things!
I hope she has an understanding family.

anna--when she talks like that; just repeat what she says or say"it must be really hard on you, mom" funny how sometimes validating what they think is real calms them down--i took care of a gentleman that was retired army & CIA--totally paranoid -- the only way he would let us in the room was to give a secret knock, leave only one light on and talk to him in whispers... it was so sad, yet once we walked the trail he was on, he was easier to care for. that and he told me j edgar hoover was a "pansy".
Posted by: lynn | Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 06:36 AM
lynn, the J-Ed thing wasn't that guy being delusional--that's a well documented fact. He was a big ol' closet case, who dabbled in cross-dressing, all the while persecuting gay people.
Posted by: troschne | Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 10:31 AM
i know, troschne. it was just so funny that this man would disrespect mr hoover.
the patient and i had a good rapport and it was his idea for me to write down my nnursing home stories.

I wish that all of you knew the woman in this article. She is an amazing woman and has gone through a lot the past year. Before this year she was a young, vibrant, independent woman and I really wish every person in this world had an opportunity to meet her because if you did, the negative comments would not be posted.
