Dad and son busted with 28 pounds of pot at Holiday Inn

Images-2 The California duo came to Minnesota because they were having so much trouble selling it in their home state, because of the abundance of so-called medical marijuana. Police say the father and son had suitcases filled with freezer-sealed bags of marijuana, and that the bags were sealed to try to cover the pot scent. (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

You know the economy is in a recession when dealers have to go out of state to make money.

Posted by: twerp | Dec 3, 2008 11:02:21 AM

legalize it

Posted by: buddy | Dec 3, 2008 11:04:37 AM

Guys, guys, guys,

You are supposed to pack the sealed bags in COFFEE to hide the smell.

Twenty-eight pounds is worth one hundred thousand dollars? Dang, things have changed since I was ... hmmm ... I forgot what I was saying.

Posted by: Russ | Dec 3, 2008 11:22:21 AM

Sterilize them.

28 lbs. = 448 oz. Even at the high street price of $100.00 an oz. that is only $44,800.00. Apparently math skills are not required in Minnesota law enforcement. They wouldn't intentionally inflate the value would they?

It always makes me a little sad when that much pot is taken out of circulation!

Posted by: Kelly | Dec 3, 2008 11:53:56 AM

That price assumes the dealers divide it up into dime bags....the worst dollar/weight value out there.

Keep lying to me gov't...kepp lying...

Posted by: Sean | Dec 3, 2008 12:23:26 PM

Goes to show you, if its legal. What will the dealers do.....

Posted by: | Dec 3, 2008 12:51:51 PM

wtf is a 'freezer sealed bag'? did they close them up while in a walk in freezer? also, i like how the cop gave a detailed explanation of why they came to minnesota to sell--but it appears that the victims didn't talk to the cops, so it's all speculation.

wonder who called in the tip.

as for the value, it's probably that there hydroponic weed, which goes for 3-400 an ounce. or so i've heard.

Posted by: lester | Dec 3, 2008 12:58:08 PM

Pot should be legalized for a host of reasons.

Why did they feel they had to drive all the way to the Midwest to sell the stuff?

Posted by: cherie | Dec 3, 2008 1:28:27 PM

The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree -- or in this case, the seed doesn't fall too far from the weed.

Ozium,

Your math is accurate unless it's BC Bud or Dro.

A 1/4 oz. of that in my neck of the woods is $125.00.

There are two things that are routinely mis-reported by an order of magnitude or more:

1) Size of a Crowd
Ever tried to count how many people in the grocery store? Even with photos its difficult to get a clear count over fifty. Most really large crowds are estimated on the basis of the square footage of the area.

2) Street Value of Illegal Substances or Services
Contraband is contraband. It is outside the economy and therefore cannot be conventionally valued. The "street value" is the most extreme example of subjectivity that exists. For example, no good looking girl stoner ever has to pay retail for weed.

Heck ya. When they turn that stuff around they wanna make some good money off it.

Actually, I thought the price was kinda low, At the local medical pot shop some killer hindi kush bud goes for 75 an eighth. I have no idea what the name stands for, but it is really, really good, or so I have been told

Posted by: Phantom | Dec 3, 2008 3:34:50 PM

no weed's worth $75 an eighth. stop the madness.

I agree with all, unless Farmer Bob speaks of sterilizing the sellers. If they'e legalize it today, the economy would recover in a week. Then, of course they'd still outspend the taxes on it and screw up more economy issues. Detroit sucks. And Y'all talk trash about the South here. Gimmee a break. If the Big three were located The South, and smoking legal Mary Jane, they'd be making the finest cars in the world. (If they could just remember where they just put that air wrench. "Oh yeah! It hangs in the same place till I need it again. Wow".)

Sorry for the typos, short term memory loss!

Posted by: Mikey | Dec 3, 2008 5:07:37 PM

What I thought was kind of amusing was that, even if the value estimate's a bit off, they were doing that volume of business and couldn't afford a better car than a 1989 Buick. (And that's not one of the Buicks that is cool to lift up like a 4x4 and put 24" wheels on, either.)

The Hindu Kush is a mountain range in Central Asia between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
