Well, he lost one antler so he's less of a trophy, maybe he will make it through hunting season.

I could sure go for some nice venison kabobs right now. Some venison jerky too.

Well isn't that ironic! I guess it's no different than stocking your own fishing pond though.

It's more humane to take them out fast with a bullet than to let them die slowly by thirst or starvation.
G-Man, I'll bring some potato salad and garlic bread!

It's the (maybe) feel good story of the deer season! (for the deer, anyway)

Seems like a lot of people have been "hunting" with cars around my neighborhood lately...
Posted by: sometimesilie | Monday, November 24, 2008 at 11:44 AM
I'm especially fond of venison sausage that my uncle has made. Big controversy up around his way (N.E. Pennsy) unscrupulous butchers "forgetting" to include the backstrap. I guess that is old news by now, from a couple of seasons ago, but I'm sure it still goes on...
anyway, someone will probably want that guy for a trophy, (hope he gets away) but most hunters in it for food would a prefer smaller, tastier doe.

Yumm, venison. Whoever bags that buck is going to be disappointed about all of the bruised meat.

Bambi! Ahhh!

"so he could be gunned down by hunters"
THAT is bullshit.
It's a weepy, treehugger whiney diatribe about hunters WITH NO PROOF that the deer was shot.
Not only that butt, the deer was SAVED BY HUNTERS.
Do you think that those of us who hunt ONLY want to KILL KILL KILL??
I don't usually get pissed about these slurs however, THIS WAS wrong.

Yes, all the beef, chicken, and fish used for food died peaceably in their sleep after long, happy, productive lives.
Posted by: Sheila | Monday, November 24, 2008 at 01:10 PM
Um, A.V., no where in the article does it say the rescuers were hunters. In fact, it said that the guy who found the deer doesn't hunt.
Posted by: troschne | Monday, November 24, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Well, A.V., just why do you think the deer was released? To frolic in the fields? There is NO PROOF that the deer wasn't shot after being released. In fact, I could have just eaten that hapless deer for lunch. Perhaps I did.
By the way, what is hunting about if it isn't about killing? Isn't that what the guns are for?

Who cares if it was shot?
A few years ago I totaled a BMW Sport Wagon when I hit a dang deer.
Deer are a nuisance in many areas.

Bullets, rocks, auto, forest fire, starvation (be it from old age or over population)... obviously I don't want the critter to suffer - who does? - but in the end he's gonna die anyway, and suffering will be involved, so does it really make a difference?
I feel really bad for the squirrels who've been hit, and they're in the road and still obviously in a lot of pain. You can see their tails thrashing, and I can't imagine how much terror and agony the creature is feeling.
Do the big black crows really wait 'til the road kill is dead before they start eating it?

I am really disappointed in this site. What a crummy comment.

***released so he could be gunned down by hunters****
LOVE....obscurestore. HATE....it, when our host slips these liberal weenie snippets into a commentary.
But I still love obscurestore!

Hopefully soon will come at least one story of one hunter shooting and killing another hunter. It's a game; there will be collateral damage. But...it certainly saves any sterilization fees.

IT WAS LUCKY NOT TO BE SHOT ON THE SPOT

antlers or no antlers, some of us still hunt for the meat. they have been trying for years to eat antlers and still havent figured it out yet

I love the comment "I hope you big tough hunters.." sounds like a purse carrying, high heel wearing, poodle walking, girlie boy peta wanna be. I have killed my share of deer & antelope, but I do have compassion for animals (I know that sounds like an oxymoron ), I am glad the deer was rescued relatively unharmed.

Venison is actually much better for you than beef, pork or chicken...its low in fat...has no anti-biotics or added steriods in its system...its eaten natural feed and been free range its entire life.
While I couldn't shoot anything (except with my camera) I'd still rather eat Venison than anything you can get OTC (except free range, organically raised meat..) which is quite a bit more expensive than eating a deer your family has killed.
In Ohio our deer population has exploded to the point where they're becoming a major problem. There are more deer in Ohio than there were when people first settled here.
I dont have issue with Jim's comment line...but I know quite a few hunters and none of them are blood thirsty killers. People that assume that should take a trip to the meat factories and see how the meat they're eating is raised and killed.

At least the deer has a running chance. If it didn't die from capture shock, which causes a heart attack, basically, it will likely die of old age. Wait a minute. Few things die of old age in the woods. While they're helpless and dying, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions or bears often tear them apart. I'd take a bullet over that. At any rate, that deer has a chance at survival, is now hypersensitive to humans and will work harder to avoid us. The cow I got my steak from never had a chance. And don't say "It's different." It isn't.
