Who needs the Gallup Poll when car washes predict elections?
One Madison, Wis. wash shows Obama leading McCain, 324 washes to 281, or 53.6 percent to 46.4 percent. A second location in Madison produces an Obama lead of 486 to 421, resulting in the exact same percentage. (Wisconsin State Journal)
I bet a McCain supporter will wash his truck 67 times to juice the stats.

In my town, a bunch of teenagers hang out at the carwash. I bet most of the customers were under 23.

I really don't think we can expect much in the way of predictive accuracy out of a state that has been figured prominently on OSRR.

Is it the less traveled places I've lived?
Gallup, nor any other pollsters have ever contacted me, though I've waited by the phone for a lot of years. Also don't know anyone that has participated in one.
What does one have to do to get polled?
Be gentle now,,,,,

Probably no more or less accurate than all the other polls out there.

Remember this is Madison. I'm sure Appleton has a totally different car wash result.

Thomas
If you lived in an urban area with a very high population you would get polled a lot (you could also vote A LOT)

I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I have never been contacted by Gallup or any other polling firm. But then again, I got rid of my land line ages ago; I use my cellphone exclusively.
That is a major problem with polling; a lot of folks have disposed of their land lines in favor of a cellphone to trim expenses. Unless you receive something in the traditional mail, e-mail, or get polled like when they used to do "man on the street" polling, I don't think there really is an accurate way to get a poll.

Hey Thomas, there's a bar in the town near mine where you can get polled for $25.

I signed up on the Zogby site to be added as a possible pollee (is that a word?), and was contacted a week ago with an email/online poll about this election. I also was called about 3 or 4 weeks back. I'm in a very rural part of VA. First time I've ever been polled.

Funny, but sick.

Your $25.00 polling place involves dancing doesn't it?
Posted by: RockyMtnMac | Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 08:40 AM
@Phranqlin: What makes you think Obama supporters didn't do the same?
IMO the election - we're screwed nomatter who we vote for.
Posted by: skeptic | Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 08:55 AM
I think it depends on where you live - i.e. in a swing state or a swing district.
For the record I've never been polled either - and I have exclusively lived in heavily populated urban areas. For the record, we only get to vote once, when we're allowed to vote at all ;)

@skeptic -- Because McCain's the one who's behind in the car wash poll. If Obama was behind, I'd expect his supporters to do something similar.

"IMO the election - we're screwed nomatter who we vote" for.
indeed, but much more screwed in one instance than in another. How fast you want to make that handbasket trip should inform your vote choice.

KG...you're on the wrong end of the age spectrum honey...its "is that with teeth or without"?

"I bet a McCain supporter will wash his truck 67 times to juice the stats."
I believe you are confusing this with ACORN registering voters.

LMFAO!! My mind is totally in the gutter and when I read these comments in that light.......pretty freakin hilarious!
I'm feeling so silly today.

The car wash near my house recently had a sign on the marquee that said "HAND HOBS $10"
My guess those customers were former Bill Clinton supporters.
