Suicidal man decides not to jump off ledge, but then falls

His body partially hit the concrete and a large inflatable air mattress police had set up while trying to coax him down. "When he fell, there was just a large gasp, like, 'Whoa,' " says one of the spectators. (Washington Post)

I'm sure all the people sitting in traffic waiting to get home were cheering when he fell.

"The man had been taken to the hospital yesterday after being involved in a car accident."

That's sad. I'm wondering if he had a head trauma from the accident and that's what made him suicidal....or if he was trying to kill himself when he got into the accident. Either way, it's really sad.

There is a poignant message here...I just cannot figure out what it is.

Posted by: cherie | Jul 21, 2008 7:15:00 AM

I think the message is

Be careful, you can change your mind in a second; but physics can't.

Posted by: nellagain | Jul 21, 2008 7:28:09 AM

Cherie, I think the message may be, "when life really sucks, it's better than no life".

The secret to flying is simply missing the ground.

I think the message is that gravity can be a dangerous thing, when used unwisely.

Suicide is painless, but screwing it up can leave a hell of a bruise.

"Marina Streznewski, who lives in the 900 block of New Hampshire Ave., a few blocks from where the man fell, said she came out of her home about 1 p.m. to see a gawking crowd snapping photos of the man with their cellphones."

Now that is the America I love. Snap those photos and send them to their loved ones.

He must have been drinking.
Sounds like he was smashed.

It's curious to me that people want to see a guy splat on the ground. Or are they all watching simply because they are afraid for him? I doubt it...

Thanks Jim,

I need a good laugh this morning.

What an asshat. Be careful what you wish for.

Ok...so the Lesson for the day is:

GRAVITY SUCKS

Torgo...Your "Suicide is Painless" brought this to mind...(The M.A.S.H. theme)

Through early morning fog I see

visions of the things to be

the pains that are withheld for me

I realize and I can see...

that suicide is painless

It brings on many changes

and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make

all our little joys relate

without that ever-present hate

but now I know that it's too late, and...

The game of life is hard to play

I'm gonna lose it anyway

The losing card I'll someday lay

so this is all I have to say.

The only way to win is cheat

And lay it down before I'm beat

and to another give my seat

for that's the only painless feat.

The sword of time will pierce our skins

It doesn't hurt when it begins

But as it works its way on in

The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

A brave man once requested me

to answer questions that are key

is it to be or not to be

and I replied 'oh why ask me?'

'Cause suicide is painless

it brings on many changes

and I can take or leave it if I please.

...and you can do the same thing if you please.

Reno, I stayed up this last new years (and I REALLY needed the sleep) to watch some doofas make the world's largest jump on a motorcycle. My husband and I both wanted to see him crash so bad.

When he cleared the jump the first time, he said he was going to go for it again. We were like, AGAIN!! There we were again wanting him to crash. It's sick but true. Death and pain is just so intriguing when it doesn't involved me or my loved ones.

It's like when Spongebob Squarepants was going to get beat up by Flatts the Flounder, Gary the Snail brought out a camera to capture the moment.

Now how I see it is that falling isnt the problem its that sudden stop at the end that always gets them.

Posted by: Pyro | Jul 21, 2008 9:23:01 AM

I've never understood why authorities try and stop suicides from occuring, or if they even have the legal authority to do so. If it were up to me, I would establish a nationwide network of suicide centers where mental defectives (and perhaps dog owners and their pets) could come and die painlessly. People who are suicidal need to be cleaned from the gene pool anyway, lest their actions to end their lives take along one or two others unwillingly.

"I've never understood why authorities try and stop suicides from occuring"

I'm partially with you on this one. I also want to add that some suicides can harm others. Like this guy jumping from the building, he could've killed somebody if he landed on them, so the authorities blocking off the area can be a good thing to keep innocent civillians out of the way.

"oh, you want to kill yourself, ok, well, let us get the sidewalks clear and you can jump to your heart's content."

Posted by: thereverendtwerp | Jul 21, 2008 10:11:43 AM

FYI...while I can agree with the concept of just letting the suicidal maniacs kill themselves...as long as they aren't taking out other people in the process...

Here are the facts on the legalities:
In the U.S. suicide has never been treated as a crime nor punished by property forfeiture or ignominious burial. (Some states listed it on the books as a felony but imposed no penalty.) Curiously, as of 1963, six states still considered attempted suicide a crime--North and South Dakota, Washington, New Jersey, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Of course they didn't take matters as seriously as the Roman emperor Hadrian, who in 117 AD declared attempted suicide by soldiers a form of desertion and made it--no joke --a capital offense.

Posted by: cherie | Jul 21, 2008 10:40:26 AM

That Hadrian, what a joker.

A discovered suicide attempt will still get you 48 hour detainment in the psychiatric facility of choice in most states regardless of whether its a criminal offence or not.

And suicide isn't painless.
