Man gets jail for blowing pot in stolen puppy's face

A 19-year-old man who stole a $1,500 Pomeranian puppy and who blew marijuana smoke into its face until it passed out was sentenced Wednesday to 60 days in jail. The judge scolded him: "The bottom rung of humanity abuses animals for their amusement. Anybody who abused animals for their own amusement has a problem." (Chicago Tribune | Mug shot and story)

Anyone who abuses animals for their own amusement should be SHOT.

I'm thinking that 1000 hours of volunteer work at the local shelters and maybe some rabid pit bull retrieval would be good for this guy.

Dump him into the volcano. Fewer people = fewer consumers = less greenhouse gasses = better world for the rest of us who can get it together enough to NOT abuse animals or cut babies out of pregnant women. It's called rational population control, and it is desperately needed.

what gave it away, was the dog had the munchies and started saying "dude" excessively

"Anybody who abused animals for their own amusement has a problem."

I have a problem. I used to put pieces of tape on the bottom of my cat's feet. It was amusing.

Oh paleeze.....sure it's horrible to abuse animals but "the bottom rung of society"???????? In today's news anywhere online you can find a) a 12 year old girl's body found after having been raped and killed by her uncle after her ex-stepfather set up teh "date" between the 2...b) a hundred drunk drivers that killed someone....c) a hundred reports of child abuse.......gee, that bottom rung sure must be getting crowded. Getting a puppy stoned doesn't exactly qualify for the same "rung" as an uncle that rapes and kills his niece....one would burn in hell if there was such a place, the other would just get a good scolding from God if there was such a person.

"Lopez -- who has two previous theft convictions -- had faced up to 5 years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to felony theft."

Two previous theft convictions and all he gets is 60 days? This guy is obviously a POS. He should have gotten the max.

Huh. Second-hand smoke. That's just nasty.

Posted by: russ | Jul 3, 2008 6:59:31 AM

twerp, isnt it great when they step on a plasic bag with tape on their feet?

"Defense attorney Ricky Holman argued that Lopez had been manipulated into committing the theft by the workers [females], whom he knew."

A guy who can't stand up to to 2 women and sixty bucks needs ....I dunno, Marine boot camp? a new set of cojones?, One on One Counseling with Chuck Norris?

In "Fight Club" Brad Pitt's character remarks "we're a generation of men brought up by women--maybe the last thing we need is more women" (although you notice that character is the one schtupping Helena Bonham Carter)

HE JUST WANTED TO SHARE THE HIGH I GUESS

In defense of the judge's statement "bottom rung of society"...it has been proven that people that abuse animals for their own amusement graduate to more serious crimes...particularly child abuse or sex crimes.
Better to nip them in the bud than wait around until they start abusing people.

A highly ironic statement, since Brad Pitt has pretty much been devoured by Angelina Jolie.

Just a freaking dog people. Where is Dickless Tater when I need him. For once I'll agree with his post. Shot it, be done with it and all is well.

twerp, I did the same thing as a kid! Not abuse- while PETA may disagree, I think that most people with a view outside of their own sphincter would agree.

Cher, I hate to call you out in this, but its always a button pusher for me

"it has been proven that people that abuse animals for their own amusement graduate to more serious crimes"

No it hasn't. What has been discovered is that *SOME* former human beings who have since lost their species status for the more gruesome atrocities they perpetrated also reported that they had abused (actually violently tortured and killed) animals.

The trifecta of behavior is
Violently torture/killing of animals
Bedwetting
Setting Fires

The ususual example here is to point out that 100% of the serial killers on death row have eaten mashed potatos. That doesn't *prove* that mashed potatos eaters go on to be catachable serial killers.

While its true that the trifecta above is used to screen juvenile offenders (and direct them into programs) it is only because they are relatively rare behaviors and pretty easy to see.

If you can say its "proved" that animal abusers become child molesters--well, hell the judicial system would be doing a lot more than diverting them into therapy. They'd just be lining them up and shooting them to the applause of a grateful nation.

Here's a little question for you. There's a possibility being explored that a genetic basis may exist for this type of behavior--production of protein that seriously inhibits empathy and affect. Say they find a marker for it.

a) would you abort a baby on those grounds
b) would you compel pre-natal testing for the marker and compulsary sterilization for carriers?
c) Detain anyone with the marker.

$60.00 for stealing the dog & he gets 60 days in jail.
So, he earned a dollar a day. Dumba$$.
He should've held out for at least minimum wage.

Blowing smoke into a dog's face is not a 'gateway' behavior to worse crimes. This guy is already rolling down that pathway @ a very high speed.
He's a repeat offender & they only gave him 60 days?

BTW - lovely black wife-beater shirt.
I'm sure he does not limit his abuse to small dogs...

Extermination, please.
He's sucking up too much precious oxygen.

What a loser. 19 and already a three time loser. Can't wait till he gets out of jail this time!

Nell, we can agree to disagree. I worked as a vet tech for years and the police came in and specificially asked us to report animal abuse because it was a proven indicator of spousal, children and potential sexual abuse. There were times (unfortunately) that we turned in folks for animal abuse and it was later proven that their children or spouses were also being abused.
First hand case in point...my ex-brother in law...he was extremely abusive to his dogs and we found out once my niece had reached adulthood that he'd sexually abused her and physically abused her Mother.

Posted by: cherie | Jul 3, 2008 9:08:26 AM

abuse of animals may not necessarily be a direct or absolute indication that someone is going to abuse humans, but it's a pretty gosh darn good indication.

I for one don't need the whole "well it might someday progress to humans" argument to string up an animal abuser because I like animals and think it's very sick to abuse them and think that only very sick people do so. It's repugnant and pretty 'effing cowardly.

I also like spraying the cat with the water hose.

bad bad me.

My little brother (8 or 9 yrs old at the time)stuck a cat in a mailbox, then threw in a handful of lit firecrackers. The mailbox flew off the pole & smashed in the middle of the street. The cat just wobbled away.....dazed & confused.

He & his wife now own 3 cats & spoil them like they were children.

When my brother was in high school, he spray-painted the band director's cat green and white.
