Lynne Rice, 74, crashed her 1988 Cadillac into the front window of Joe's Food Mart, causing about $8,000 in damages. After plowing half-way through the store, Rice got out of the car, walked over to the cooler and pulled out a six pack of Budweiser. (Long Beach Press-Telegram)

I'd say it's time to start thinking about guard rails for these storefronts. This sort of thing seems to happen all the time!

they really ought to make anyone 70+ take driving tests... I swear you hear about more accidents with seniors than teenagers by a long shot

It's the high gas prices!

Maybe she has trouble getting around and needed to pull her car right up to the cooler to pick up her beer.

"back in my day they brought the beer to your car. nowadays you gotta get outta the car and walk. Hell with that. just drive up and get it."

The NERVE of that store owner, refusing to let her by the beer. After all, like Dick C. said, she WAS already there!

I think she already had enough.

Sterilize her.

So she had an accident. Why not have a beer afterward? Glad nobody was hurt.

Seriously, that sounds exactly what an old neighbor of my would do after one of his fights with his wife.

I'm SO glad to be out of that neighborhood, even though it meant downsizing (a lot).

They have simulators for pilots. We have Gran Turismo for the game station. Why don't we have simulators for new drivers (teens) and the elderly (over 70) before they can get or renew their licenses? Xboxes aren't that expensive. Surely there is some wonderful computer nerd at the DMV that could write a software program. Patent it and charge the government 150 mil for the rights to it. If the price is high enough the government just might buy it!

K, if that's your solution, my I suggest that it would be easier to just make people over the age of 65 retake their drivers test every time they renew (like every 4 years).

God, I don't want to think about that. My parents are getting to that age. Help me!

Posted by: twerp | Jul 1, 2008 8:15:39 PM

twerp, I feel your pain. I have a 15 year old soon to be driver and two parents who are in their 60's. But my ex-mother-in-law is the one who scares me. She's in her 80's, drives a big old station wagon, cruises at a comfortable 40 mph on the interstate and has to look through the steering wheel because she is so bent over with osteoporosis that she can't see over it. But the dmv keeps renewing hers. Yes. I think they should have to take the test when they renew every four years.
