Numb nut?!: This year's National Spelling Bee highlight

Every year, there's always one great moment at the National Spelling Bee. Three years ago a kid did a "Napolean Dynamite" impression. (He later wrote about on it on OS&RR's comments area: "My mom slapped me across the face; left a mark."). Last Friday, the crowd broke up when a boy was asked to spell what sounded like "Numb Nut." That wasn't exactly it. Here's the YouTube video.

that was truly funny. it really did sound like the first time they guy said it he said "numb nuts" and to add insult to injury you can hear someone say "what did he call him? Numb Nuts" LOL

My funny moment from this year was when a girl from California asked the orator to pronounce "canicular" in a California accent.

I'm sorry andie, but why is that funny?

I'm a native Californian and most of us don't think we have an accent. I couldn't imagine someone trying to affect a "California accent." I envisioned the orator putting on a "valley girl" accent (which is stereotypically what most think of when they hear CA accent)

andie - ya better give us the California phonetic spelling version or the rest of us won't get it...

I'm sorry! I do not get it!
Please do not hate me!

Anna, I'm guessing in California canicular is said something like can-ick-you-ler. It probably doesn't sound like that if someone from say, Alabama says it.

Like, totally canicular dude!

Thanks, Reno, for the education.
EWWW!
Sorry for dragging it out...
Illinois is a very long ways from California.
Chicago has it's own vernacular.
Now I totally require some brain bleach....

I read a book about all this a few years ago. Some of these kids, all they do is study for the "big show" and hope they make it. Aside from their schoolwork, studying the lists is all they do.
