Prospective juror in marijuana case is caught smoking pot

Cornelia Mayo was nabbed with a joint outside the courthouse during a break. "I've had prospective jurors get lost before, but it never occurred to me that they might be getting ready for a marijuana trial by, allegedly, smoking marijuana," says the judge. (Houston Chronicle)

I've never been called to jury duty, which I guess is a good thing, but if I am, maybe doobage would be in order - I just don't think I'd do it AT the courthouse.

have to know what you are talking about to make a good decision right?

Posted by: lamby | May 7, 2008 9:07:48 AM

As if additional proof is needed on how drugs damage one's brain. I've long advocated the death penalty for anyone caught using or dealing illegal drugs. It would rid our country of the scourge of drugs in short order. In this case, the man should have been taken round the courthouse and shot in the head. Potheads and other addicts contribute zilch to society. Instead, they slowly poison and damage their brains and bodies, with hard-working taxpayers having to pick up the tab for the damages. People who use illegal drugs are losers in every sense of the word.

Kudos to the defense attorney for his ability to pick a jury panel.Jury selection can be much more important than fcts.
That being said its beyond me why this is still a crime.
The same judge that sentences the defendant walks back to his office and pours a nice shot of Jack Daniels (which doesn't ruffle my feathers either) just seems unfair.

Posted by: spstevens | May 7, 2008 9:21:53 AM

Read the article - 1st of all it is not a man it is a woman. 2ndly pot has only been illegal for the past 50 or 60 years - before than it was not a crime. Clinton smoked it - the new governer of NY state smoked it. They are adding to our society ( good or bad).
I think most people inbetween the ages of 18 and 40 have at least tried it. I think people who make broad misstatements are bigger losers.

Posted by: bw | May 7, 2008 9:24:33 AM

Dick Tater, you do know that quite a few Asian countries have that exact penalty for drug possession, right?

Posted by: LittleKitty | May 7, 2008 9:35:51 AM

There you go LittleKitty, Dick Tater should move to one of those countries.

Posted by: R | May 7, 2008 9:41:24 AM

I thought that they actually need to test the evidence before the verdict.

As usual, we have someone posting while overdosing on "Dick Tasting".

Posted by: A.V. | May 7, 2008 9:42:10 AM

Gee, Dick... maybe cops should just have the ability to execute anyone they think is doing something they don't like on sight. Just *bam*, problem solved.

Maybe there's a cop that doesn't like uptight, pretentious faux-intellectual conservative sh*theads, Dick, and *bam* problem solved. For us, anyway.

*halo*

I'm sure by now everyone has figured out that Tater's real last name in Cheney.

Posted by: G-Man | May 7, 2008 9:57:50 AM

Bringing your gear to the court house is just plain dumb.

I've long been a vocal advocate of legalization, but I am NOT an advocate of stupidity.

Posted by: elchampino | May 7, 2008 10:14:30 AM

Personally, I think anyone who goes unbathed for up to two weeks should be executed.

Posted by: kevy | May 7, 2008 10:15:38 AM

too each his own. i happen to agree with bw. legal pot...and on yesterdays thread...prostitution. leave the legal system to focus on more serious crimes.

Posted by: Cherie | May 7, 2008 10:19:20 AM

People who use drugs are separating themselves from life. They are weak. I don't ascribe to the kind of measures DT mentioned, but I have no place in my life for drug users.

Furthermore, there is a marijuana smoker in my building who gets high while playing loud movies at 2AM. Not very endearing.

Posted by: Torgo | May 7, 2008 10:22:22 AM

I'm sure DT has dredlocks. Reason....look at his comment in the Wal-Mart terrorist story.

Most dreadlock sporters smoke pot. Hypocritical nutbag.

I guess she got stoned and she missed it, eh?

Posted by: Reno | May 7, 2008 10:40:27 AM

How many of you have had a brother/sister/mom/dad/child killed by a drunk driver? Maybe 20%?

How many of you have been beaten up by a drunk spouse/parent? Maybe 40%?

How many of you have had a family member die as a result of smoking? Maybe 70%?

How many of you have had a serious illness or loss of life due to pot? Maybe 1%?

Sit down, shut up and twist one up and you will feel better and you WON'T KILL ANYONE DUMBASSES!!!!

Posted by: Ted | May 7, 2008 10:42:19 AM

Ted, your numbers are way out of line-- check the Morbidity and Mortality Report--they keep track of this stuff.

Why is that no one is ever busted for smoking pot while finding a cure for cancer? They always seem to be doing something rather dumb.

Posted by: nellagain | May 7, 2008 10:54:27 AM

Gee Ted, maybe you should twist one - you sound a little uptight.

Legalize it!

Posted by: Reno | May 7, 2008 10:56:01 AM

JUST PREPARING FOR A TOUGH DAY IN COURT I GUESS...DIDN`T WANT TO STRESS OUT.

Posted by: ULTRA | May 7, 2008 10:57:28 AM

Drugs are an escape. That said we all escape from reality in one or more ways. Video games, books, movies, message boards these are escapes as well. As far as drug users and having no place for them, that statement is to broad and almost immediately includes everyone. Maybe no place for illegal drug users, since alcoholism is rampant in the US, and we have more people on prescription drugs than not. Legalize it! Alcohol is far more dangerous of a drug than marijuana.

I was sitting in my basement.
I just rolled myself a taste
Of something green and gold and glorious
To get me through the day.
Then my friend yelled through the transom
"Grab your coat and get your hat son,
There's a nut down on the corner,
Givin' dollar bills away"
But I laid around a bit
Then I had another hit.
Then I rolled myself a bomber.
Then I thought about my mama.
Then I fooled around, played around
jacked around a while and then
I got stoned and I missed it.
I got stoned and I missed it.
I got stoned and it rolled right by.
I got stoned and I missed it.
I got stoned and I missed it.
I got stoned... oh me... oh my.

anyone formulating a response to an argument should stop as soon as you see it was posted by dick tater, just as facts are not a factor in any of his opinions, your response will not be a factor in any of his future posts. You're just wasting your time.

BNS, thank you for your public service annoucement. On the other hand, he's been getting a little stroppy lately.

how's your brain-eating going?

Now, now. Let's keep civil. A dram is better than a damn, afterall.

Posted by: Torgo | May 7, 2008 11:30:56 AM

i was wondering why yucca quit posting here..

Posted by: chris n cali | May 7, 2008 11:51:42 AM

She shoulda baked it into a brownie. Lasts longer that way, and way harder to get busted.

Posted by: Sean, Torrington CT | May 7, 2008 12:05:40 PM

Never smoked it, prolly never will. Should it be legal? Probably, at home at least. But, I think you show know not to puff around the court house.

I am more worried about someone with their labrador in their lap and changing their baby's diaper while zipping down the interstate . -That- is a direct threat to my health.

She just wanted to keep an open mind during the trial.

zombies are cyclical. They'll be back...

Posted by: sometimesilie | May 7, 2008 2:48:18 PM

LOL at chris...I've been pretty busy(not jury duty either)...I LOVE Dick Taters comment. He makes me laugh. He is the anti-yucca...

legalize it

Posted by: yucca | May 7, 2008 4:48:09 PM

I'm not a pot smoker, but I've noticed a couple things:

Alcohol is legal. It usually causes folks to get mouthy and pissed off leading to a fight and someone getting hurt (or worse).

Pot is illegal. It usually causes the munchies and a bad case of "I love you, man". Folks on pot don't want to fight, hurt anyone, or drive usually...they just want to veg out and chill.

Make sense to anyone? I'm with the legalize it crowd on this one.

Posted by: jojo | May 7, 2008 7:10:01 PM

Yucca...
I would agree except for the revolving door syndrome that "Legaling IT" would create for me & zillions of other parents across America!
We are only responsible until the age of 18...
don't push it!

Posted by: Anna | May 7, 2008 8:14:15 PM

I would never "push it" Nor would i ever even share it with someone that young. Even at 18. Education is the key with this issue. For decades we Americans have been force fed disinformation on Marijuana, Cannabis Sativa can be a very useful product as well as a homeopathic medicine within its own right. More information is the key and not believing everything ya hear.

legalize it.

Posted by: Yucca | May 7, 2008 9:00:47 PM

For crying out loud, this whole pot debate is rediculous! As a former EMT, I can promise you that I have seen more death, dismemberment and tragedy that was alchohol-related than pot-related. Actually, in my five years served, I never once responded to a call regarding a pothead. I wish I could say the same for booze. Or pill-popping.
Oh and Tater? You're comment: It would rid our country of the scourge of drugs in short order. In this case, the man should have been taken round the courthouse and shot in the head. Potheads and other addicts contribute zilch to society. Instead, they slowly poison and damage their brains and bodies, with hard-working taxpayers having to pick up the tab for the damages. Shows how narrow-minded you really are. No offense hon but give me a break. Many potheads I've met are productive, hard-working, tax-paying citizens with stable jobs, stable families and generally NICE. You should research the facts on how many potheads actually cost us taxpayers money for treatment versus alcoholics. You'd be amazed at how much worse booze is to our society than a bunch of stoners chilling out at home stuffing their face. I do agree with you on the point that addicts (think crack, heroin, etc.) are a scourge to society and THEY cost us money. Not potheads. If you don't believe me, go talk to an EMT, go ask in your local ER.

Posted by: CryMeAriver | May 8, 2008 4:48:49 AM

while dick is out of line, i agree with him, I have seen what pot can do to disrupt family and socity.
that and a high persentage of people, i think like 1 in every 1000 or so will have a severe allergic reaction, potentialy fataly.
drugs should ultimently be more controled then they are now, dealers should be executed along with pimps.
and how damn dumb do you have to be, or high for that matter, to smoke a joint at the bloody court house?

Posted by: Cain | May 8, 2008 6:20:35 AM

Richard Spud is one of our resident trolls. I usually ignore him, although every odd once in a while he will actually post something pertinent.

Posted by: Phranqlin | May 8, 2008 7:46:39 AM

Control all drugs, pay the pharmaceutical companies more money, and while we're at since alcohol is clearly a more dangerous drug, lets bring back prohibition. That should teach all the drunk addicts. I have seen fatal allergic reactions to bee stings, so lets get rid of them too.

Posted by: Lou Ford Prefect | May 8, 2008 8:07:52 AM

OK you got me. I'm really a pot smoking, closet homosexual cross dresser. I just post my usual comments because I have a small dick and I like to try to stir things up. I have no life. Pity me, please?

Posted by: Dick Tater | May 8, 2008 9:15:44 AM

Tater hon, we knew this all along! Doesn't it feel good to finally admit the truth? :o)
