Twin soldiers have different views of the Iraq situation

Andrew and Adam Katz have both served in the Army in Iraq. Andrew says things will continue to improve over there "as long as Iraqis try." But twin brother Adam says "no matter how hard we try, it's not going to change what's over there." (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

Oh those crazy twins, busting up our preconceived notions of twinship. Next thing you'll tell me one likes Coke and the other Pepsi!

Each twin takes a side...fair and balanced journalism.

None of us should be surprised by what has become of Iraq.

I think this is an interesting perspective. We often are hearing only one side in the media. Interesting.

doesn't suprise me

Posted by: twerp | Mar 24, 2008 11:52:37 AM

It proves a point;twins do have seapart minds and can think on their on.

Two American twins from the heartland go to Iraq to try and make a difference. One comes back heartened by the events in Iraq, another comes back discouraged and shell-shocked. Force them to live together for 6 months, and they stop being polite and start getting real. I smell the ultimate reality/comedy/drama in the works.

What's beginning to bother No 12 is the number of people being cycled through Iraq, in five years they've run a quarter million through and most have come back with very negative views of Muslims (well, they were being shot at, etc.) by the time they've crowbarred the last of the troops out of there--Its going to be a virtual impossibility to rehabilitate the image of Arabs/muslims in the american psyche.

nell, when they start stocking our Wal-Marts with cheap junk, all will be forgiven.

Posted by: sometimesilie | Mar 24, 2008 1:11:57 PM

At least they're home...generally these soldiers get cycled through three or four tours. And even when they are shipped home we/they sometimes get called back. Stop loss

Posted by: yucca | Mar 24, 2008 1:16:44 PM

a warhol moment has just taken place.no one will care in 15 minutes about what the twins think or how the press decided how this was important enough to publish. ....now wait what were their names? see its happening already

Posted by: AngrySockMonkey | Mar 24, 2008 2:28:56 PM

Yup ASM. GWB has forgot about all of em. I guess they're all easy to forget unless your brother or sister, etc ends up coming home w/out a limb or worse, in a body bag. I bet ya wouldn't forget then. I will care in fifteen.

Posted by: Yucca | Mar 24, 2008 2:40:29 PM

before you lay anymore of the guilt trip on me i was there.
the last thing any of us wants you to do is feel sorry for us. so put your bleeding liberal heart back in the garbage bin where it belongs.

Posted by: AngrySockMonkey | Mar 24, 2008 2:44:26 PM

and its not stop loss that gets them called back in. if they decide to get out most do have reserve obligation to fulfil as part of their contract, they are placed in the inactive reserve, and they can be called back in if they are needed. the stop loss usually takes effect before the deployment. not as a tool to call people back in.

Lighten up...I fealt you were being a bit sarcastic. I was wrong. And in no way am I lib. I don't feel sorry for anyone. I was also there the first round and in several different places, Africa(Liberia) Sarajevo and others. So before your unwarranted name calling starts know to whom your disparraging remarks are pointed at.

Posted by: Yucca | Mar 24, 2008 3:01:15 PM

ASM is just pissed because he knows the mission is doomed to failure. Bush brought a pair of boxing gloves to a debate, and five years in, all the promises have fallen through.

Anyone remember Goofus and Gallant?

Posted by: fermata | Mar 24, 2008 3:18:19 PM

i was being sarcastic. some of (i didnt say all)the public really doesnt care what happens next.they bite off on what the media spoon feeds us. the country is starting to turn into a nation of idiots because of what the media wants them to see, feel, hear, only by giving part of the story and not the whole truth. i apologize if i came off a little strong there.but i have seen it first hand on how the media is. their main purpose is to sensationalize to sell .
i dont blame anyone especially the president, remember he was given some incorrect info. plus if you remember it was also based on misinformation that was put out by saddam as a show of force in the middle east. bush made a decision . and we went in. now we have a job to do . and hopefully wont quit until the mission is accomplished.then these injuries and death will have been for nothing. we owe it to them.

nice try sean

Posted by: AngrySockMonkey | Mar 24, 2008 3:26:54 PM

What's wrong with the brother on the left? He looks like a lobster. One arm is regular sized. The other is huge.

Posted by: Dave | Mar 24, 2008 3:29:46 PM

The only way to determine if the war is working is to send triplets over there to ensure a tie-breaker.

Posted by: Bill J. | Mar 24, 2008 4:13:36 PM

Both twins are morons for talking to the press. If you're in the military, you don't go directly to the press with your opinions. They are your opinions, and the press has a habit of magically assuming that they are also the military's opinions. They'll both get in some shit for this for sure.

Posted by: joe | Mar 24, 2008 7:22:28 PM

ASM, right back atcha ;)

Posted by: Sean, Torrington CT | Mar 25, 2008 6:14:09 AM

Sean is correct ASM. Let's look at the facts. We were attacked in 2001, and we retaliated. We were assisting countries fight their terror groups, and somewhere during the fight we decide to hit Iraq (against UN wishes). Yeah they have WMDs all right....their WMD devastated the American economy and foreign relations around the world.
It's OK, though, because we have plenty of kids to send to their deaths all in the name of big business. THAT is what Bush meant when he said "Mission Accomplished".

Andrew's answer was generally yes. "I think eventually it will work out. . . . It just needs more time," he said.

Took less time to kick Germany, Japan and Italy's ass. More time my ass. More money my ass. More dead soldiers my ass. More dead civilians my ass.

It's all about King George. Worst king we ever had.

One has spent a full stint over there, and one (the one with a "less positive" outlook, but not nearly as negative as it could easily be) is only three months in. It would be interesting to know whether or how his opinion changes once he's spent as much time there as his brother.

Posted by: KC | Mar 25, 2008 10:58:50 AM

I wonder if a hundred years is enough "time"?

Posted by: sometimesilie | Mar 25, 2008 11:05:33 AM

HELL LET THEM FIGHT OUT THEIR DIFFERENCES LOL

Posted by: ULTRA | Mar 25, 2008 11:50:50 AM

Last news I heard is that the military said it needs to be there until 2018 in order to finish what was started. If McCain gets elected, that just might happen.

Posted by: Naga Please! | Mar 25, 2008 12:29:11 PM

Sean is correct ASM. he may be i dont argue that, he is an american and entitled to an opinion. thats good.
lets look at the fact you stated....ok lets look at all of the facts. not just what the press tells you.

seems to be if things were all great there i see the press takes the hooray for america look what we did stance. and if things are going bad for us it turns to oh no look what you did. this is your fault.lets blame the pres.

give me a break
sensationalism sells.I see youve been suckered too

Oh we went to Iraq because the living conditions were so bad? Here I was believing that we went to Iraq to remove the WMDs. The same WMDs that weren't found, and terrorism wasn't really sponsored by Iraq. That's when it changed to improving the lives of Iraqis. Oh I see....
How about not believing any of the news media at all? So where do we get our news from now?
