Guess when the truck falls through the ice and win $3,000

The Suburban fell through last Thursday, but the winner won't be determined until the truck is on dry land and the clock -- guaranteed to short out as soon as it hits the water -- is inspected. (Janesville Gazette)

Just this sort of event was featured in the novel American Gods, by Neil Gaiman, which I happened to finish a couple of days ago. To say more would spoil part of a very good book.

I can see the next headline: "Local Kiwanis Accused Of Polluting Lagoon". Morons.

That just seems really wasteful...but then Suburbans do guzzle a lot of gas and cause lots of pollution....so maybe this is a good thing!

That scene from American Gods was the first thing that popped into my mind, too.

Next year they should save the truck and use the "morbidly obese aunt" for this game.

LOL, SwarthyTroll!

I can just see a bunch of old guys pushing some barefoot fat lady in a floral MU MU across the ice like she's a pawn in a curling match. There will be a target painted on the ice for her to land on!

Huh, target...makes me think of a Beatles song....but then curling makes me think of a Beatles movie....I'm going to have to pop in my Anthology I and listen to "One After 909."

LOL ST

Why didn't they just set up a camera system to tell the moment the truck fell through so everyone can get their prizes now, instead of waiting until they can haul the truck out of the ice weeks later to check a clock that is "supposed to short out when it hits the water"? Technology People... it enables us to do wonderous things. Seriously.....

Posted by: Cherie | Mar 24, 2008 8:31:15 AM

Cherie: I think they use the shorting out clock because the truck has to be completely submerged. I think this clock would also be a bit cheaper than setting up surveillence with cameras.

What a bunch of friggin morons.....hopefully the DEC gets hold of this and sues the idiots that thought it was a brilliant idea. Here's the next contest, let's all guess how much pollution was caused by leaking brake fluid, gas, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, shock absorber fluid, power steering fluid, and general grease and grime from teh underside of the vehicle. MORONS! Next time put the group of Darwin award recipients out on the ice...only don't bother retrieving them after they fall through.

Posted by: jj | Mar 24, 2008 9:13:36 AM

jj: I believe that all of the "guts" are removed before placing the truck on the ice.

Posted by: lawdog | Mar 24, 2008 9:44:00 AM

I find this incredibly wasteful. If the locals enjoy guessing when heavy items will fall through the ice, use a large block of concrete or a steel beam, not a vehicle that can be used or donated to charity.

Dick - because using a boring steel beam or hunk of concrete would be boring.

twerp - are you a curler?

I agree with all of you that express environmental concerns. There are plenty of other 3000 lb things they could've used that would've been safer and just as effective.

Posted by: Cherie | Mar 24, 2008 11:38:37 AM

BFT

nope, not a curler...I didn't even know what curling was until about 15 years ago when I saw the Beatles movie, "Help!" I asked my parents what they were doing and THEY didn't even know....so I did some research and figured it out on my own. I even wrote a report about it in my 9th-grade history class. About 8 years after all that research, curling started to become really big in the olympics and stuff.

It's kind of hard to get a curling match going in Alabama. The closest game you'll get to curling here is shuffle board.

It's not as bad as it looks:

Here’s how the fundraising icebreaker works:

An area General Motors assembly plant accumulates parts that have been dented or otherwise cannot be put on their new vehicles. The plant donated discarded Suburban pieces to the club to be pieced together onto a 1992 GM truck frame. A car dealer donated a paint job so the Suburban looks almost showroom-ready.

“We sink the truck in a lagoon; so, we work with the (United States) Department of Natural Resources,” says Blackhawk Golden K’er Pete Kealey. “We can’t have any oil in the differential or glass in the windows.”

Sadly RichmondTom had to point out something that should have been very obvious to someone such as "JJ" but he would rather be an ignorant asshat and assume the worse case situation.

I do wonder what would go threw faster though. The SUV or the amount of crap that dicktater spews everyday.

$20 on tater!

next time you call someone ignorant you may want to learn how to spell "through" in the same post, but hey, thanks for living up to your name.
