Update: Group raises $57K of $85K needed for Fonzie statue

"Happy Days" fans rejoice! It looks like the Fonzie statue will be unveiled in Milwaukee next October. He will not be depicted on a motorcycle, however. The Fonz favored a Triumph, while Milwaukee is the hometown of Harley-Davidson. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

85K for a statue of a guy from a TV show whose character was kind of creepy if you think about it? A guy in his mid-30s living in a garage who hangs around teenagers all the time.

If Philly can have Rocky, we can have Fonzie.

Wasn't Henry Winkler just old? I don't think they were trying to portray him as that old. I thought he was supposed to be a few years older than Richie and the gang. Doesn't help when the actor is that old, but.....

Not to pick nits with Milwaukee Boosters, but with a murder rate that 2.4 time the national average, are they really *sure* that this is the best use of 85K?

lets compromise nell. they should create a dahmer statue instead.
Posted by: buddy | Nov 27, 2007 7:58:33 AM
come on haters...it's just the "Fonz"...once in a while we should spend a little money on a few smiles...there will always be better ways to spend money...so what!
Go Milwaukee!!

There ought to be some sort of memorial to his victims (the site where he killed most of them has been razed is an empty lot) at least and a little footnote explaining about how one victim escaped, found the police, and was then turned back over to dahmer.
Even though there's no death penalty in WI, dahmer didn't last too long, which is something to brighten your day.

Ok folks.....I want a bronze statue of Ernest Borgnine dressed in his Airwolf outfit for downtown west palm beach. Who do I see to get this started?

JJ
Trot down to the state offices and get yer ass registered as 5013c (non for profit organization) set up a bank account and a mail drop. Apply for a grant to get seed money to "popularize" the project (ads, public declarations of support etc.)
Privately decide on a couple of likely spots for the statue. Then start fundrasing--try to get in on the block grant from feds.
Be prepared to explain OVER AND OVER how this eyesore benefit the city as whole ( identify some existing problem and explain how the statue will fix it--really)
When you start to get respectable amount of money, go talk to the city council and start looking for a sculptor.

There may be no death penalty in WI, but there is surprisingly 'honor among thieves,' which is why Dahmer didn't last too long in the system.
As for a statue, I'd rather see a statue of Fonzie than some of the ridiculous statues that have made me do a double-take. I'd prefer one depicting him on water skis jumping the shark, but that's just me.

Just because Dahmer killed them doesn't mean that they should be remembered. From what I remember he killed a bunch of nasty ass low lifes. That would be like putting a memorial for John Geoghan in Boston for the sole reason that he was murdered.

Thanks nell! if it works out I'll have a statue built for you here in FL! How about one of Ken Berry in his F troop outfit?
Posted by: jupiterjim | Nov 27, 2007 8:57:31 AM
Nah--Nell strikes me as more of a Ken Berry from "Mama's Family" type.
Posted by: d'ep | Nov 27, 2007 8:59:54 AM
d'ep!
You cut me to quick! Sniff ....and I thought we were...sniff I mean I thought we had a future Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
What am going to do with all these monogrammed towels? And the matchbooks with "d'ep & Nell 4 Ever" printed on them.
And HOW am I going to explain this to Personalities 12 through 17?
Posted by: NellAgain | Nov 27, 2007 9:15:53 AM
Oh come on, Nell! I mean, if it's good enough for Betty White, SURELY personalities 3, 6, 8, 10 and 11 get a say! (I know everyone tends to gang up on poor #8, but just listen this time!)
Posted by: d'ep | Nov 27, 2007 9:48:26 AM
Betty White wouldn't come up to my armpits. Neither would Ken Berry, though he was great dancer and later a fair physical comedian.
If has to be someone from a sitcom...ummm...well I always wanted to be Morticia Addams, but there's the height issues as well as hair color etc.
But if I really had my druthers it would be Della Street or Danny John-Jules
Posted by: NellAgain | Nov 27, 2007 11:06:23 AM
How about a Jonathan Winters memorial of him clinging to the top of his mast?
85$k would purchase the whole cast as lifesize papier mache bobbleheads.
Posted by: debilsadvocado | Nov 27, 2007 11:22:37 AM
My dream tv role would be...Laura Holt. (But for completely selfish reasons. Oh yeah.)
So Nell, do all of you forgive me?
Posted by: d'ep | Nov 27, 2007 11:53:28 AM
Well, Ok, I think *someobody* gave the matchbooks and some raspberry tes to number 15 as there is distinct smoky quality to the air in here.
Posted by: NellAgain | Nov 27, 2007 11:56:40 AM
Ok. How about a statue of "eb" from Green Acres? I have a coworker convinced he invented the internet. That and the musical "Oprahoma" is coming to town.
Some days it's just too easy.....

Is your astuteness ever a burden?
meant for NellAgain. But applies to you to jupiterjim.

Milwaukee could ALSO have a statue of Ernest Borgnine - he was always a creepy clown in the old Great Circus Parade. Cooler by far than the Fonz.
