Teens regret pulling "Wedding Crashers"-inspired Visine prank
The five high school boys recalled how a "Wedding Crashers" Visine gag led to sudden digestive distress and decided to see if it would play out like that in real life. They poured "like a quarter of the bottle" of eyedrops into a classmate's water and he drank it. "We all intended a little stupid joke, but we never intended to send him to the hospital," says one of the boys who appeared in court this week. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

wow and i thought I was a dumba$$ in high school... but still: whoda thunk some Visine could be so BAAAAAD??? even though i generally HATE kids, i gotta say that i feel sorry for these little SOB's...

I don't feel sorry for them at all, though I agree that I thought Visine was just some sort of benign substance, not unlike distilled water -- if it's acceptable for some extremely valuable and fragile part of your personal real estate like your eyes, then how could it wreck one of the hardiest parts of your body, like your stomach. Strange.

They didn't see the CSI episode where the cocktail waitress killed a guy with visine? Same story, she just wanted to make him crap his pants but squeezed the bottle hard. 1-2 drops is OK, but a good squeeze can be lethal.

I just wonder, doesn't a bottle of Visine have a warning label on it? Not for ingestion. When you put Visine in your eyes, it is in no way ingested something that goes into your stomach gets into your blood stream. Those kids totally deserved the punishments that they got and they're lucky that he didn't die.

Slipping anyone a mickey, whether it's Visine, narcotics, or just piss, is wrong. Crying to the judge that you have been an good student and want to go to college shouldn't mean you avoid serious punishment. I suggest that these guys cough up ten percent of their earnings for life to the victim, since "expunction of their convictions would help their life prospects dramatically" why shouldn't the vic benefit too?

So, can anybody drop the science here? What's so potent in Visine that it soothes dry, red, itchy eyes but can be fatal if taken internally? I am surprised.

I can't belive these kids got this 'idea' from a movie. Everyone knows that movies & tv don't influence acts of violence or stupidy.A disclaimer probably would have changed their minds!

Do not use Visine Allergy Eye Drops if you are allergic to Naphazoline Hydrochloride,
Pheniramine Maleate or have hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of Visine Allergy Eye Drops,
which include Disodium Edetate and Benzalkonium Chloride 0.1mg/ml as the preservative
Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Naphazoline Drops may be harmful if swallowed, especially in children.

it seems to me that since you use visine to soothe dry, irritated eyes, that usually have swollen blood veins in them, the visine basically acts as a blood pressure medication to reduce swelling.

I think I've always been considered a bit of a stick in the mud by a lot of people in that I detest "practical jokes" in any way, shape or form. They are -- almost by definition -- cruelties intended to inflict physical or emotional pain. At best they're malicious, at worst they're life-threatening.

The Visine in the drink trick can be easily found on discussion boards frequented by retaurant and bar workers. It's their way of punishing guests that anger them. You may be surprised to see what else they think it's alright to do to drinks and food, or how little it takes to earn the punishment.

That's why I'm always sweet as sugar to waitstaff and bartenders. :-)
I agree with Acedia...I hate practical jokes. I don't think humiliating or hurting someone is that terribly funny. I think these kids should have the book thrown at them-they almost killed their schoolmate.

Visine comes in different formulas, but "original" Visine bottle says, "WARNINGS: Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away." Probation for these boys? Ooooohhh, scary. "Probation" is the reason kids continue to do stupid, harmful things. They know they will face no serious consequences. They're laughing and high-fiving even now.

Sheila you are absolutely correct. Children today have no idea what the word "consequence" means today.
Posted by: D | Nov 16, 2006 9:52:30 AM
They put someone in ICU for several days, for Pete's sake. Does that not mean anything to the judge?
I'm not saying these kids deserve to be on a chain gang. But probation and community service won't teach them a thing. Just that if you whine hard enough and Daddy pays for a good lawyer, you can get away with just about anything.
And I really tend to doubt that the kid they did it to doesn't hold any grudge against them. I wonder if he's planning on baking some Ex Lax brownies for them.

Judge not...
Stupid? Yes. Intentional and malicious? We DON'T know.

Correction- we do know it was intentional to pull the "prank." But we don't know they meant to seriously injure or kill- high-fiving indeed... how ignorant.

Minor hijack: I've always wondered about the expression "Practical Joke." Does, for instance, unwittingly drinking a Visine-laced beverage also organize your closets and wax the car for you?
Posted by: mianne | Nov 17, 2006 6:54:24 PM
Just so you all know, this was not intentional. I know these people and it was not supposed to kill him and it would not have. The kid was not in ICU and was seen at the mall the day after.

u guys are out of your minds saying that you don't feel sorry for these kids and they deserve severe punishments... they were playing a friendly joke because they witnessed it being played in a popular movie... don't u remember when u were their age? u never tried to play a joke and without your intention it got a little out of hand? you guys are ridiculous their just kids who made a mistake... you sound like a bunch of idiots... o they deserve to pay ten percent of their earnings for the rest of their life... okay buddy i'm guessing you were the loser in high school who everybody made fun of.. sucks for u... and the guy who hates kids makes me laugh.. u hate kids but u cant even spell... and u were a kid once... u guys really make me laugh... coming from a college student

I cant believe this last comment by "Steve"...YOU were probably the biggest bully in High School and still sound like one! I hope no one ever tries to play a joke on you or your kids and something goes terribly wrong. But from the sounds of it you don't have kids because no one would ever want to marry you! So you call people who care about this INNOCENT Child, Idiots? Your the idiot! And by the way I dont care that the kid that was POISONED was in the mall the next day, because by the Grace of GOD he didn't react to the POISON that is contained in VISINE. Those kids are punks and deserve to pay for what they did or they will end up like this asshole "STEVE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh one more thing "STEVE"...speaking of spelling...your the idiot!
It's "they're just kids" not "their just kids" Since we are trying to look like the intelligent one...
Get a job you loser!
