Spelling Bee contestant does a Napoleon Dynamite impression
Did anyone else see this? One of the funniest moments of the National Spelling Bee yesterday (it was on ESPN) was when contestant Dominic Ranz Ebarle Errazo, before spelling his word, blurted out in his best Napoleon Dynamite voice: "Do the chickens have large talons?" The knowing kids in the audience laughed, but the adults were puzzled. The TV commentator said something like, "I wonder if he's giving some kind of code." (Here's the audio.)

I haven't heard anything about it, but I'd sure love to see the tape.

Why is it funny? The movie sure wasn't.

That's Great! You gotta have a sense of humor not to mention watch the move a lot of times! I'd like to see the tape also.

If I were about to appear on a major cable channel and only had a few seconds, I sure as heck would do something like this. Go Dominic!

I saw it on fark yesterday, complete with a link to a Quicktime snippet of that bit of the show.
Poor kid. He's stuck in nerd-kingdom now.

It's too bad the word didn't have anything to do with chickens or talons... Still, I like the quote.

When we were debate dorks in high school the losers (you know you're sad when other debate dorks think you're a loser) would quote Monty Python until you wanted to beat them to death with their own briefcases. It's good to see that a new generation of celibacy bait has found a way to identify itself.

Firstly, I'd like to say thank you to all of you with a sense of humor. If you're wondering, I did that on my own; no dares, no challenges, just something I decided on myself. The humor helps to ease the tension.
And I swear, this IS Dominic Ranz Ebarle Errazo, #222 in the Bee. That was me who said the quote on TV. I just got back from DC and only now have free (sort of) internet access. Thanks again!

Good for you, Ranz! Congratulations on the Bee, and on making it a little more fun to watch :-)

I can't wait to see the video! Unfortunately, the update link no longer works. Does anyone have the address to a copy of the video (like the Fark link), please? Thanks!

Ranz, can I ask you something? When you got such easy words those first few rounds, were you confused? concerned? delighted?

anybody know where i can see this again?

Hmmm... Naturally, I was relieved. When you're up there, you're very nervous; any break you can get to ease your nerves, you'll take. At least, for me. That's where the wisecracking came in.

I lost IQ points watching this movie the first time... but the next 20 times or so I just crack up laughing! This is in the spirit of Monty Python...an entire movie of one liners to repeat over and over again to annoy your parents, co-workers and friends.

Mainly because I am from there. But you would think people running a spelling bee would know how to pronounce Oregon.

Well, I'm rather glad I could provide comedy to the masses. My main purpose for saying that was to entertain.
